Obituary for Herbert Giesbrecht

Herbert Giesbrecht
Giesbrecht , Herb PhD
July 31,1936- Wakapa, MB
March 2, 2017- Calgary AB

Herb was a survivor of cancer and had been confined to a wheelchair for the past ten years. He was born July 30,1936 on his grandparents farm near Wakapa, Manitoba. He spent his summers working on the farm and his winters completing Grades 1-11 in Holmfield and Grade 12 at Killarney Collegiate. Herb’s life long quest for knowledge enabled him to complete degrees from the Universities of Manitoba, Guelph, and Michigan before receiving a PhD in the field of Environmental Planning from the University of Waterloo. Herb worked with the Manitoba Parks Board, SAIT and Mount Royal College in Calgary.

As a young man Herb enjoyed skiing, curling and golfing but above all else he was our Music Man. Gifted with a perfect ear he played many instruments and was a master tuner. His mandolin was never far from his side. We will always remember his Blue Grass solos and duets with Marilyn, sung in his deep base voice at family campfires. Herb loved to jam with his many friends in Calgary and Quartzite, Arizona where they wintered for many years. He and Marilyn joined friends to create a professional Gospel Music CD. Many were sold and the proceeds given to the Quartzite Lutheran Church.

Herb gave of his time and energy to promote and encourage others to enjoy music. The Foothills Bluegrass Music Society, the Prairie Mountain Fiddlers Association, the Foothills Acoustic Music Institute, the Kiwanis Music Camps, and the Shady Grove Bluegrass Festival at Nanton were Herb’s favorite groups.

Herb will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Marilyn Giesbrecht [nee Gusdal]; his adopted daughter Bonnie Cain; Papa to her children Megan and Michael Cain of Calgary; his adopted son Ron Fernandez [Miele] of Vancouver; his siblings and their families, John, Bill, Don [Deb], Helen Saunders [John]; Herb was predeceased by his sisters-in-law Arlie and Peggy. He will be fondly remembered by Marilyn’s extended family.

A Celebration of Herb’s Life will be held at the Irish Club (6452 35 Ave NW, Calgary) on May 13, 2017 from 2:00pm-6:00pm. There will be lots of music and food.
