Obituary for Effie Johanna Young (Wyma)

Effie Johanna Young (Wyma)
Evi passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 22, 2014 at the age of 90. Born in Zutphen, Holland, she came to Canada with her family in 1926 and settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She attended Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon and later served with the Wrens in Halifax in WWII. Evi had a beautiful singing voice and sang with the Kenny Peaker Big Band at the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon. It was there that Jack Young first laid eyes on her and they began 56 loving years together. Jack and Ev moved to Calgary in 1959 where they raised their family, Barry, Barbara, and Robbie. Ev was predeceased by her loving son Barry in 1978, her husband Jack in 2001, her sister Johanna and brother Jan. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Barbara Haggis (Chris), son Robert Young (Sheila), grandchildren Sabrina Young (Kelly), Joel Young (Breanne), John Haggis (Jessica), Barry Haggis (Amy), Jason Young (Shannon), great grandchildren Sophie and Jenna and numerous nieces and nephews. Ev was the most loving and kind mother and grandmother a person could wish for. All who met her, even for just a moment, fell in love with her. She was very proud of her Dutch heritage and always said, "If you weren't Dutch, you weren't much" but it was always said with a smile on her face. "Gram" loved her summers at Waskesiu, especially when all the kids were there crammed into the Harradence cabin. She made many friends and had a lively 8 years at the Chateau Renoir. A special thanks to Dr. Mustada and Leslie at the renal clinic, Sharon and the care givers at the Renoir, and also the wonderful staff at Southwood Hospice. Friends and family are invited to an open house at the Haggis residence (1319 Killearn Ave. SW) from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 4, 2015 for a celebration of Ev's life. If friends so wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation (350 Michael Cowpland Drive, Kanata, ON, K2M 2W1, www.cwf-fcf.org). The family invite you to share memories, stories and photos of Ev here on her book of memories. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services.
