Obituary for Maria Ciavarelli

Maria Ciavarelli
Maria Ciavarelli
July 7, 1935 - March 13, 2018

Maria Ciavarelli passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the age of 82. She leaves behind her daughter Janet (Christopher) of Kamloops and son Peter (Andrew and Amanda) of Calgary.

Maria was born in Cermignano, Teramo, Italy. There was a lot of struggle and work just to stay alive. Maria came to Calgary at the age of 18 by ship and train, and said many times that she came to Canada to give her children a better life.

She met her man, Domenico, in an English class, and they married each other on June 21, 1958. They raised their family, entertained the Italian and German communities, and grew old together. Maria was proud of learning to speak and write in English, and became a capable seamstress, knitter, and homemaker.

Maria looked after Domenico for many years as his dementia worsened. On December 26, 2016, Domenico had to enter Long Term Care. Throughout 2017, Maria excitedly awaited the return of her son Peter, who would be a helping hand and good company. Then in late September, Maria developed a severe infection and never fully recovered. She was compassionately cared for by her son for 3 and a half months at home. Her last days were made comfortable at Peter Lougheed Centre by the wonderful staff on unit 39.

Maria passed away while watching the sunrise at about 7:15 am on March 13. It is reported that Domenico felt her passing.

Many heartfelt thanks to Dr. Quaiser and staff, CFD and EMS, and closest friends April, Marilyn, and Louise.

A private family goodbye will be held with cremation to follow. A Celebration of Life for Maria and Domenico will be held at a later date.

Janet and Peter invite you to Maria’s home on March 25th from 6pm to 8pm to visit and share memories.
