Obituary

Grosh, Carl James
December 24, 1955 - October 17, 2020

Carl James Grosh, cherished husband of Kathleen Emily Grosh of Calgary, AB, passed away at Peter Lougheed Centre on October 17, 2020 at the age of 64 years.

Carl was born in Calgary, AB on December 24, 1955. He will be remembered first and foremost for his wonderful sense of humour and quick wit. He was always ready with a story or joke to make you laugh, or a quick comeback to something just said. Carl was the most kind, gentle, and patient person you’d ever have the fortune to meet. He was a great friend, a man of his word, and left a lasting impression.

Carl was a loving and proud father to Colin and Carolynn, and loving grandfather to Everly and his namesake, Harrison Carl.

About 20 years ago, fortune smiled on Carl when he met Kathy, who would go on to become the love of his life and whom he married on a perfect October day in 2010. They started off in trying times and became saviours for one another, facing many challenges, but always enjoying their time together.

Carl took pleasure in the simple things in life, often in the company of good friends. In his earlier days, Carl enjoyed road trips, camping, snowmobiling and playing softball. Always a hard worker, Carl attended SAIT to become a Journeyman Welder and Steel Fabricator. Most recently, and up to the end, he was in a job he loved as Production Manager at TIW Western.

In more recent years he enjoyed driving his truck, flying (and crashing) his drones, watching movies too loud, going for coffee at McDonalds (large with 3 cream and a cranberry orange muffin), or a good nap in almost any chair. He also enjoyed taking random Sunday drives, to nowhere in particular, just to spend the day with Kathy. You would often find Carl out building or fixing anything to lovingly improve their acreage home. At the end of the day, his favourite thing to do was to relax in the gazebo, watching the water flow from the fountain in the garden.

Carl persevered through many medical challenges over the years and fought to the end. He never complained and was the picture of resilience, always maintaining his good humour.

He will be forever loved and remembered by his beloved wife, Kathy; son, Colin (and Brooke) Grosh of Spring, Texas; daughter, Carolynn Grosh of Fort Collins, Colorado; and his dear grandchildren, Everly Ann Grosh and Harrison Carl Grosh.

He is gone too soon and will be missed terribly by all. We will be okay, just not today.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when everybody is able to come together to properly celebrate Carl’s life and the impact he had on so many people. Please subscribe to the obituary posting at Choice Memorial (www.choicememorial.com) in order to receive updates, which will be posted at a later date, and to share any photos, stories or condolences with the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carl may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada (www.kidney.ca), Alberta Diabetes Foundation (www.albertadiabetesfoundation.com) or the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca).

Kathy - sending heartfelt condolences from your family at Calgary Fire. Although I didn't know Carl personally, I do remember how well you spoke of him and how much you were looking forward to your retirement with him by your side, spending your days together doing whatever it was that struck you at the time! I am sorry that your days together did not last longer. Please know that you are remembered well and with fondness, and that your love for your husband shone clear to those with whom you worked. Wishing you peace. Mary Fischer, A/Captain, C Platoon, Calgary Fire Department

Dear Kathy;
Aggy and I were so saddened learning of Carl's passing. He was such a caring person full of life, with such an inspiring positive attitude! I had the pleasure of working with him for over 17 years at TIWW and he had a way with people that a lot of us could learn from. I recall that you were unable to enjoy a honeymoon due to his health in 2010, but then the following year you both enjoyed a "staycation" on you acreage in the trailer. Who knew that in 2020 that would be the new norm! Everyone that knew Carl will miss him immensely. Although it may be hard to accept, it will get better in time. Surround yourself with loved ones, think of the good times you both had and know that he is looking down at you and loving you from heaven. I was able to find some pictures of Carl at work to share.

Please accept our deepest condolences!
Karel and Aggy Kense
