Obituary for Vincenzo Ammirati

Vincenzo Ammirati
Dec 5, 1943 - Feb 16, 2020

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Vincenzo Ammirati.

Vince grew up in Castelsilano, Catanzaro, Italy. He was born to Guiseppe Ammirati and Maria Isabella Scalise and was the eldest of 4 children. As a teenager, he was taught woodworking skills from a local craftsman, and at the age of 15, travelled to work in Switzerland for 10 years to help support his family. Shortly after, he returned to Italy and made the decision to immigrate to Canada to start a new chapter on October 18, 1968.

On January 5, 1969, he met the love of his life, Onelia De Marco, and before long they were married on September 20 of the same year. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Isabella, Teresa, and Joseph and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Some of Vince's passions included watching soccer, wrestling, and Commissario Montalbano while enjoying a cup of coffee. He spent many hours woodworking while smoking his cherry cavendish pipe tobacco. He loved archeology and snuggling in his favourite chair with his grandson's childhood Bob the Builder blanket. Vince's life was an example of positivity, strength, support, and love. He was the heart of his family and endlessly devoted to his loving wife. He was an amazing teacher, craftsman, and patriarch that built a beautiful legacy.

Vince suffered many health challenges which he fought with courage, grace and humour. His strength of character was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Vince is survived by his wife, Onelia; his daughters, Isabella, Teresa (Todd); son, Joseph (Jennifer); grandchildren, Alexander, Jonathan, Nicolas and Micayla; his sisters, Teresa and Filomena, in San Giovanni in Fiore; his brother, Luigi (Rosetta) in Pistoia, Italy; nieces, Maria Assunta (Pietro), Rossana and Lea; nephews, Antonello, Fais, Giuseppe and Marcus; sister-in-law, Sylvia Vespa; aunts, Amalia in Novara and Catarina in Ollegio and cousins, Filomena and Pasquale. He was predeceased by his father, Giuseppe; his mother, Maria Isabella; brother-in-law, Mario; aunt, Maria and uncles, Pepino and Saverio. In addition to his family, Vince had an amazing group of supportive friends.

In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Vincenzo, donations may be made to the Diabetes & Kidney Disease (Kidney Foundation) at 202, 11227 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L5 or to the Calgary Health Trust (Unit 46) at 800, 11012 Macleod Trail, Calgary, AB, T2J 6A5.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Dr NW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 25, 2019 at 11:00 am.

A special thank you to the teams of medical professionals who cared for Vincenzo over the years.
