Obituary for Todd Lyle Hammer

TODD LYLE HAMMER

August 31, 1968 Weyburn, Saskatchewan to May 4, 2023, Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our beloved husband, son, uncle and friend Todd “Hammy” Lyle Hammer, at the age of 54.

Todd was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, on August 31, 1968. During his childhood, his family lived in Weyburn, Ralph, and Saskatoon all in Saskatchewan and Evansburgh, Wildwood, and Calgary all in Alberta plus Winnipeg, Manitoba. While in Calgary he played hockey until he was severely injured, when he was slammed into the boards and broke his neck. After recovering, his parents enrolled him in 5 pin bowling.

After graduating from John Taylor Collegiate in Winnipeg, Todd became a drywall taper tradesman utilizing his skills in Toronto, NWT, Nunavut and Calgary. In later years in Calgary, he teamed up with Larry Mackinnon where due to the perfectionists they were, their skills were in demand.

His social life included cheering for the Saskatchewan Roughriders (LOUDLY) plus the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs, a few beers with his friends, golfing (with a hole-in-one at Hole 17 in Bootleg Gap, Kimberley, BC on June 20, 2006), bowling (where he met his spouse) and playing cards with his family.

Todd was also known as slightly accident prone. For example, once his hand met the cement bathroom wall at the bowling centre. While golfing, he tore his ACL and meniscus. More than once he was on crutches or in his own private boot. About 19 months ago, Todd decided he wanted to be Frankenstein for Halloween and fell and split his forehead open. He was fortunate enough to have a plastic surgeon to fix his injury which required 50 stitches. Can you see the scar on the pictures above? What an amazing job! Another time while bowling, he thought he pulled a groin muscle but it was actually a hernia. In fact, shortly after the initial diagnosis, he got another hernia on the other side.

Todd will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 27 years Shelley Struthers, his mother Reina Hammer, his sister Twyla Sim (Eric) and his nephew Brasen and niece Ember plus numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Todd was predeceased by his father Lyle and both sets of grandparents.

The family wishes to send special thanks to Dr. Tang and her staff plus the Tom Baker Palliative staff on the fourth floor for their care and compassion.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society , 200 – 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5; Telephone 403-205-3966 or email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca.
