Obituary for Thomas Van Hardeveld

VAN HARDEVELD, THOMAS (TOM) 1950-2021

It is with profound sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of Tom Van Hardeveld on January 3, 2021 at the age of 70 after a long struggle with cancer.

Tom was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he spent the first 5 years before returning with his family to the Netherlands. The family then emigrated to Canada in 1960, finally settling in Calgary on Eamon Road by the 1A Highway. Tom quickly learned English and went on to excel in school, finally graduating from the University of Calgary in 1974 with an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. He then began his career in gas transmission with Alberta Gas Trunk Line in Calgary. In 1980, he moved to Edmonton with Nova Corporation to work as a Maintenance Specialist and got married to Marilyn. By 1995, they moved back to Calgary, finally settling in the Bearspaw area, not far from where Tom grew up. In 1999, he started his own consulting company, Strategic Maintenance Solutions, consulting and training internationally for more than 20 years, as well as teaching at SAIT, the U of C and co-authoring 3 books on pipelines and dependability. He was very proud to be a part of the International Standards group, IEC/TC56 becoming Chair in 2017.

Tom greatly loved reading, classical music, the mountains, photography, hiking, cross-country skiing and travel, especially when he could visit pipe organs and technical museums! His greatest passion though was choral music and singing in choirs, especially being part of Spiritus Chamber Choir and more recently the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus.

Tom will be deeply missed by his wife, Marilyn Ewald; along with his brothers, Wiggert and Joost; his sisters, Margriet, Anne Krauss (Philip), Mariella and Thea (Eric) Roy; brother-in-law, Grant Ewald (Shirley); along with numerous family members, friends and colleagues.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the Cochrane Home Care team and Dulcina Hospice for their care and compassion.
