Thomas Dean Mabley
Date of Birth: October 21, 1948 Date of Death: November 16, 2022

It is with great sadness, the family of Thomas Dean Mabley announce his sudden passing on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at the age of 74.

Tom will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Jane; children Chris (Lorena) and Shannon; grandchildren Emma, Ryan, Austin, Skylar, Maddox, and Parker; siblings, Bev, Jan; and numerous other family members and friends.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Viola Mabley; siblings Linda, Barry, Rod, Greg; his parents-in-law Cliff and Nora Irwin, sister-in-law Jackie Mabley, brothers-in-law Rob Irwin, Wayne Bond, and Richard Sell; and nephews John and Mike Sudds.

Tom was born in Calgary, AB on October 21, 1948 to his loving parents Jim and Viola. He grew up on the family farm east of Calgary. The Mabley farm afforded the family ample opportunity to learn the value of hard work, sacrifice for tomorrow and a first-hand observation of God’s love. Tom valued his time on the farm gaining his strong morals and ethics while nurturing the land. His future, however, was in the city where he met the love of his life Jane. At a young age, Tom and Jane married and began their life together in a modest apartment in west Calgary. No longer farming, Tom worked several jobs to make ends meet while taking drafting and design training at SAIT. In those early years, Tom and Jane brought Chris and Shannon into the world. Tom was a loving and doting father, and his children always brought a smile to his face. He was intensely proud of his kids and sought to provide unique life experiences from an early age. Tom finished his education at SAIT and began a lifelong career as a Piping Design Draftsman. He honed his skills to the extent he always believed he could design an entire gas plant himself; it was his area of specialty. Tom worked long hours to support his young family, through the ebbs and flows, good times and bad in the oil and gas industry.

When Tom wasn’t “on the tools”, he could be found in a variety of pastimes. He had an intense passion for horses, from early days on the farm to well into his 40’s and beyond. Whether it was equestrian camping, deep backwoods trail-riding or competing as a team-roper, Tom loved being in the saddle. He always fashioned himself a lifelong Alberta cowboy. Bonnie, Jake, and Colonel, and other “pets” benefitted from the love he had for them and the outdoors.

Tom began a transition from horseback to the “iron horse” eventually, finding them easier to house and feed. He started with the old Virago 920, and graduated to no less than 2 cruising Harleys, culminating in his pride and joy…the Ultraglide. Tom and Jane spent endless hours on two wheels, in the “thin air”. Tom inspired many of his friends and family to acquire their own rides. Together they met several other motorcycle enthusiasts along the way to share day trips to the Rockies, road trips to Sturgis or anywhere the pavement was dry and the roads would bend. No where was Tom freer and content than riding his hog, with the wind in his face and the sun at his back.

Tom had a particular affection for sports, with keen interest in the Calgary Stampeders and Flames. There was rarely a game he missed but we all knew why he really watched; he would talk for hours with his friends, his children, and his grandchildren, about the latest antics of our sporting heroes. Many family moments were shared watching Grey Cups, Stanley Cups and we always came away with great memories to share throughout life. He always found those occasions to be great opportunities to escape the toil of the world for a bit and be close to those he loved (we’ll continue to cheer loud even though you are gone Grandpa/Dad/Husband/Buddy).

A theme in the Mabley family has always been a great love for music. Tom could often be found entertaining eager listeners at a campfire, in the living room, in the backyard…anywhere he and his guitar would travel. He always shunned the spotlight, but he was a modest and talented musician. In his later years, armed with his Bluetooth microphone/speaker unit, he would regale his family with the latest song he mastered (with endless hours of practice) from his favorite YouTube Karaoke hits. Most gatherings in recent memory had the promise of a karaoke party breaking out at a moment's notice. He passed his love for music on to his family and this tradition is sure to be kept alive.

In his last days, Tom could be found watching biblical webcasts and programs or reading from the bible. He often shared the encouragement and hope he felt from reconnecting with God. To whoever would listen, Tom would relate the importance of prioritizing a relationship with Him and the promise of one day being with God in Heaven. His hope and confidence made a definite impression, leaving us comforted he was “right with God”.

We all miss you deeply Tom and can hardly face the thought that we won't soon see your smile, hear that laugh, or just generally feel better when you are around. Rest in peace cowboy, your work here is done.

Please join us to celebrate Tom’s life on December 2, 2022. There will be a funeral service beginning at 1PM at the Calgary Central Seventh Day Adventist Church (1920 13th Ave NW). Following the service, there is a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Chapelhow Branch 284 (606 38 Ave NE).
