Obituary for Terry McCabe

Terry McCabe
August 28, 1956 - August 14, 2020

It is with a great amount of shock and grief that we announce the sudden passing of Terry McCabe on August 14th 2020, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 63.

Terry (‘Ern’) was the son of John Campbell McCabe and Jeanne Josephine McCabe (nee Harnden), born on August 28th 1956 in Toronto, Ontario. Younger brother to Brian and Patrick McCabe, Terry grew up in the Glen Agar neighbourhood of Etobicoke, Toronto.

In the 1970’s Terry moved out west to Alberta for the first time, where his love for the mountains began. A move back to Ontario saw Terry marry Marg McCabe (nee Kilgour) and the birth of his only child, Shannon (‘Bubbs’). The call of the mountains was ever present, and in 1998 Terry, Marg and Shannon made the big move to Cochrane, Alberta. It was in Calgary that Terry began his over 20 year career with FBC as an IT Network Manager, which became the busiest and most successful period of his career.

Although his marriage ended in 2004, Terry stayed in Alberta and continued to be actively involved in the CORE hiking group. Terry spent over 9 years with his partner Ann where they travelled and enjoyed many hiking trails together, before venturing out on his own. In 2016 he became a grandfather to Hannah (‘Banana’) and in 2019 welcomed his grandson Hunter (‘Moon Moon’).

Terry loved sports, sports, and more sports, music, anything computers, laughing, beer, nicknames, and his long distance chats with brother, Brian and nephew, Kyle. Those that knew and loved Terry would know that beyond his sometimes gruff demeanor was a big hearted man that appreciated the simple humours in life; the small moments that together make great memories.

Dad (‘Grandpa T’) – I’ll never forget our singalongs to Paul McCartney and Wings in Cambridge, the adventures in Elora, the hot asphalt summers in Oakville, and the ultimate move to Cochrane that, although I hated it at first, is now forever a part of my life with Jay and the kids. No one made me laugh like you did. Thank you for everything.
