Obituary for Susan Patricia Giddings

Susan Patricia Giddings
Calgary Alberta
September 1961 – January 2, 2020

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Sue Giddings on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020 after a brief but intense battle with cancer. Sue was a loving and devoted mother, wife and a wonderful friend to many. Sue passed quietly in her sleep with her family at her side.

Born in Calgary, Sue lived most of her life here. An extraordinarily resilient person, she established her independence at a young age, distancing herself from the adversity her family life presented. Sue often described many of her close friends as the family she chose to have.

One of the things Sue liked most about Calgary was being close to the mountains. She found many excuses to spend time there with her young family. Many winter seasons were spent skiing at Fortress Mountain with a group of families that continue to be wonderful friends. The legacy lives on in the group known as the “Gate Night Girls.” You all know who you are! Brad and Sue were able to celebrate their anniversary at the Banff Springs this past Dec 13th where they were married thirty-three years prior.

If there is one word that would best describe Sue, it would be Altruistic: “having unselfish concern for the welfare of others.” Having a knack for recognizing when people needed help, Sue would not hesitate to step in and come to their aid. Whether it was a friend of one of her kids, a family in domestic stress or someone feeling alone and vulnerable, she would be there and follow through – no matter how long or how much time it took to make them feel safe and loved. Even in her passing she reached out and gave the gift of sight to two lucky people through the Southern Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Program. Her love and support to all her extended family will never be forgotten.

Sue is survived by her husband, Brad; daughters, Erin and Jessie; son, Ben, as well as her sister, Colleen. Her extended family includes Celeste, Jerimiah, Mark and Helen and of course her grand niece and nephew, Sydney and Aidan.

The family would like to send thanks to the incredible team of medical staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Center and Unit 42 of the Foothills Hospital, in particular Drs. Sarah Glaze, Steven Bisch, Rachelle Findley, Joni Kooy, and the nursing staff on Unit 42. They have shown true professionalism while extending incredible compassion for Sue and the family throughout this journey.

A Celebration of Sue's Life will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at 2:30 pm in the Thorncliffe Room at Thorncliffe Greenview Community Center, 5600 Centre Street NE in Calgary. Please note that this will be a casual celebration without a formal sit down service so show up at any time, mingle with friends and no suits required!

Cremation was provided with thanks by Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services. Photos, memories & condolences may be shared with Sue's family at www.choicememorial.com.
