Obituary for Stephen Albert "Steve" Kondrat

Stephen Albert Kondrat (Steve)

It is with great sadness that the children and surviving spouse of Steve announce his passing on Friday, December 16, 2022 after a final battle with kidney and liver issues.

Steve was born in Holden, Alberta on January 8, 1936 to Anna and Joseph Kondrat. He was the third of five children –Josephine, Edward, Steve, Bernice and Theodore (Ted). Steve grew up with his family on a farm in Holden. Many chores were part of the daily life on a farm and it is said that he, and his brothers, were talented baseball players. Steve left school and the farm to pursue opportunities in Edmonton where he finished his high school diploma and obtained a heavy duty mechanics certificate. Not long after moving, he met Diane Potter at a community dance. After courting her, they married and had 4 children who loved both of them dearly. Steve and Diane moved from Edmonton to live in Calgary, eventually moving to Symons Valley to live on an acreage. Steve was known for his large garden, his fruit trees and his amazing tomatoes – he loved to be outside, growing things and tinkering with his many vehicles.

To support his family, Steve ran his own drilling company, Pee Wee Drilling which then became his water well drilling company. Steve had the uncanny ability to find water and even to determine how much water was present by using willow branches, coat hangers and copper pipes.

In 2003, Steve lost his beloved wife Diane to lung cancer. It was several years later but Steve found love again when he met Marcella Goulet and after a short but sweet courtship, they married on April 8, 2013. Marcella and her children welcomed Steve to the family and his circle of people who loved him grew. During their marriage, Marcella and Steve travelled several times to California, took road trips, did a bit of fishing and camping, had lots of family gatherings and enjoying visiting with friend and family. Going to the Catholic Church and being part of that community was important to them both.

Steve loved to joke and tease people – he also loved to visit and be around people. Over the past couple of months, his family was blessed with extra time to be with him, to reminiscence and laugh with him. Those moments will always be special to the family – Marcella, Dwayne (Pam), Melinda, Melody, Darren, Joanne (Antone), Roland (Teresa), Raymond (Donna), John (Marci), Jim (Aman), his 16 grandchildren five great grandchildren on both sides - he will be missed so much by us all.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (15 Templebow Road NE, Calgary, AB). Eulogy and light refreshments to follow the Funeral and Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that if you wish, to please make a donation in Steven’s memory to Kidney Foundation of Canada, Southern Alberta Branch.
