Obituary for Sita Vijayaraghavan (Chari)

On Sunday, June 6, 2021, Mrs. Sita Vijayaraghavan passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta. She was 88 years of age.

She was born on April 3,1933 to Mr. MCT Chari and Amirthavalli Chari and was part of a large and loving family of brothers and sisters. She grew up in New Delhi, India and was extremely fond of Carnatic classical music and the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. She was a talented singer who began learning Carnatic classical music at a very young age and it continued to be her passion throughout her life. She developed hearing loss early on in life and it was a disability that she struggled with throughout her life. Hearing aids were not commonly available when she was younger, but this challenge did not stop her from completing her undergraduate degree and later a master’s degree in English.

She worked as an elementary school teacher and through her hard work and dedication rose to the position of a vice-principal. Much later in life, she went on to study Carnatic music professionally from the University of Delhi, India and finished with a master’s degree. She shared a happy and loving married life for 45 years with her beloved spouse Prof. M. R. Vijayaraghavan who predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Yamini Achari; son-in-law, Prof. Gopal Achari; and grandchildren, Anika and Ankit Achari.

She will always be remembered with great fondness and will be greatly missed by her family in Calgary and India. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Sita, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
