Obituary for Sharon Elaine Barker

Sharon Barker
March 30, 1962 – February 28, 2020

Sharon returned peacefully Home on Friday, February 28, 2020 at the age of 57, following a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. She was deeply loved and valued by her family and friends and she held firmly to her faith throughout her life. Her trust in God brought her great comfort as she returned to her Heavenly Father. We will all carry her memory in our hearts and rely on each other until we are with her again!

Sharon has been a key member of a large and loving extended family that will all miss her dearly. Sharon married Ken in 1983 and they were loving life-partners and each other’s best friend. They had two children, Jessica (Charles) and Marianne, and one grandchild, Leo. Her mother, Jessie, and mother-in-law, Jan, mourn her loss. Her brothers, Doug (Sue) and Russ (Suzanne), and their children (Ray, Carrie; Andre, Zoe, Ethan), and her brother-in-law, Don (Judy), and his child (Lauren) will miss her greatly. Sharon was predeceased by her father, Victor, and father-in-law, Len, who both loved her dearly.

Sharon loved to travel and explore new places. Family and friends will fondly remember walking trips in England, diving trips in the Caribbean, camping trips and family reunions, and exploring far flung places in the world. She was the best trip planner in the family, and she found all kinds of hidden gems and offbeat adventures in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, as well as much of North America. Sharon’s other passions included running, including many runs with treasured family and friends. She ran 13 marathons, at least one in each Canadian province with her close friend, Donna. She firmly supported her loved ones in their many athletic and recreational activities throughout her entire life. Sharon loved animals and cared for several animal companions throughout her life. Music was another of Sharon’s greatest joys. She played piano, dabbled in guitar, and loved a sing song around a campfire with family. Her love of nature, music, and family was celebrated every year at the Calgary Folk Festival. She was a loving, caring, and nurturing person and she will be deeply missed.

A service will be held to celebrate Sharon’s life at Foothills Alliance Church (333 Edgepark Blvd NW, Calgary) on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11:00 am.
