Obituary for Sandra Maureen Penman

Penman, Sandra
December 10, 1958 - May 1, 2023

After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Sandra Penman passed away on May 1, 2023 at the age of 64. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends overlooking the Calgary Reservoir and the mountains that she loved so much. She will be remembered for her strong community ties, amazing family dinners, and decorating for every holiday.

Sandra was born in Montreal and, in 1967, moved to Haysboro in Calgary with her family via Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay) and Pangnirtung, NWT. Growing up, she participated in Girl Guides, cheerleading, and was both an athlete and coach for the Calgary Patriots Swim Club. One of her favorite memories was dancing in the closing ceremonies of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. She was an active member in her community canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and having regular coffee chats with the neighbors that became a part of the family. Because of Sandra, the community knew the Penman House for the immaculate gardens and the festive decorations.

Sandra was known for being an art connoisseur and had a very good eye for both pieces of art and interior design. Her keen eye and attention to detail carried through in her garden every spring and summer where her green thumb turned the backyard into an oasis every year. Sandra’s love and talent of cooking was enjoyed by many, and you could always count on her to whip something up with whatever was in the fridge to satisfy any hungry visitor. Though not a world traveler, Sandra frequented her favorite travel destinations including Nakusp, BC and Pennsylvania to visit her lifelong friend, Kathy. If you knew Sandra, you knew that she was always going to be ‘29 years old in Canada’ as she celebrated her 30th birthday in Australia and New Zealand, a trip she took to commemorate her late father. Sandra’s love and celebration of the holiday’s, especially Christmas, was always enjoyed by family (above all, her nieces and nephews) and they will always remember the extravagant Easter Egg Hunts and her ability to fit more ornaments on a Christmas Tree, even when there really wasn’t any room left.

She is survived by her three siblings, Bruce (Barbara) Penman, Jan Penman, and Andrew Penman; nieces and nephews, Devon (Christina) Stout, Matthew (Jennifer) Penman, Scott (Kathryn) Penman, Bruce (Shanon) Crews, Lelia (Jamie) York, Daniel (Christy) Penman, and Melissa Penman; many great nieces and nephews as well as her three beloved cats, Veggie, Lucy and Puff. Sandra was predeceased by her father, Stewart Penman and ‘mum’, Joan Penman.

The Penman family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to neighbors and extended family who graciously helped out during her cancer journey and those that helped to bring her back home. Our sincerest gratitude and thanks go out to her care teams at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (Unit 47), Rockyview General Hospital (Unit 73), and home care. Thank you for helping us keep her home as long as we could and being a light for us during this difficult time. It did not go unnoticed and will not be forgotten.

To commemorate Sandra’s passions and interests, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sandra’s memory to the Bow Valley SPCA, Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society, or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

A Celebration of Sandra’s Life will be held at a later date. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Sandra, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
