Obituary for Rose Zsombor
ZSOMBOR, Rose Rosalie
April 25, 1930 – January 9, 2020
Rose Zsombor passed away at Chinook Hospice Calgary on Thursday January 9, 2020 at the age of 89. Rose was born in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan. Still a young child, her family moved to Burnaby, British Columbia. Thereafter, in a Hungarian play, she met the love of her life, Joe Zsombor. They married on September 5, 1946 and lived in Vancouver, British Columbia. After having their first 4 children they moved to Garden Grove, California in 1955. They continued to grow their family to 7 children. After 19 years they moved back to Canada settling in Lethbridge, Alberta where Rose became manager of Scenic Heights Apartments for many years. After retirement they moved to Coaldale, Alberta. Rose lived there until shortly after Joe’s death in 1999. Always finding joy in children, she moved to Calgary to be with her youngest grandchildren as they provided relief from her sorrow of Joe’s passing. Rose soon found herself encompassed by many new friends where she lived at Dreamview Village in Riverbend, Calgary. 13 years later, Rose moved to Okotoks for a few years then back to Calgary until her passing.
Rose was a long time member and volunteer with the Hungarian Old Timers Club of Lethbridge. Through her life she also volunteered many hours with little league baseball, PTA, and the social club at Dreamview Village.
Rose loved to spend time with family and friends, she particularly enjoyed cooking and baking for others, as she hosted various events such as family dinners and card games with friends. Forever remembered for her beautiful smile (she loved to laugh) and her friendly and welcoming personality. With warmth and hospitality she treated new acquaintances as old friends, and old friends as family. Having a love for conversation and a caring compassionate soul, Rose has touched many hearts and will be missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
With a passion for the arts Rose enjoyed dancing with her husband, singing along to her favorite songs and even a bit of acting too. Her creativity was evident in her many drawings, crafts and poems.
Having her first 3 boys play baseball, Rose quickly became a fan of the sport, however she personally chose to take up bowling. In 1978 she medaled in the Alberta Winter Games. Throughout the years she became a huge fan of watching and cheering for her grandchildren as they played different sports. Even after 7 children of her own, Rose’s love for babies and children never stopped. She was never afraid to show her silly side to get a smile or giggle.
Being surrounded by nature brought her joy. Chrysler Imperial Rose being one of her favorite scents, she was delighted by the beauty of flowers and enjoyed her time gardening and nurturing her houseplants. Also, a compassionate animal lover, a variety of pets could be found in her household throughout her lifetime. She especially considered herself a dog lover and always had a special place in her heart for her dog, Squirt. In later years she was tickled to see the animals brought in to visit at her care homes by PALS. As she aged, no matter where she resided, she enjoyed watching the squirrels, rabbits and birds from her window with sheer joy for God’s creatures.
Her children will forever remember her unwavering love for Joe and their family. With that love came an ear willing to listen, acceptance and emotional support that made her an incredible Mother. Rose is survived by her 7 children Rose (Robert) Clemensen, Larry, Andy (Diana), Frank (Kendy), Carol (James) Matthews, Patrick (Deb), Darlene (Peter)Dvorack; her grandchildren Katherine Dascomb, Jasmine and Phoenix Zsombor, Tina Djikstra and Joe Zsombor, Develin and Nicky Matthews, Amanda Beer, Kaitlyn and Ty Dvorack; sisters Margaret Horvath of Taber and Juliana Horvath of Nevada; and many great-grandchildren nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, Zoltan Joseph(Joe) Zsombor; her sister, Pearl Birch; grandsons, Scott Clemensen and Glen Dascomb; and nieces Margaret Csabay and Linda Hurley.
