Ronald Bruce McGregor
1930 – 2020
Ron McGregor passed from his home in Bowness to his home in heaven on Monday, March 2,2020.
Ron was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Mother’s Day, May 11, 1930, and spent his growing up years in Hanley Saskatchewan, on the farm with his sister and 3 brothers. He was mechanically inclined from a young age, just as his father was, and enjoyed fixing all things mechanical. All his life he loved everything that was ‘Saskatchewan’, but his drive to do things with his hands and entrepreneurial spirit brought him to Calgary, a growing city with a can-do attitude. In the late 1950s he worked for PCL, on many of what are now Calgary landmarks, including the Calgary Tower, while raising his three sons here, and worked hard. In 1962, he met the love of his life, Sally, and they started their life together in a little house his cousin built in Bowness. They would raise two more daughters, move to a bigger house in Bowness, and live the rest of their lives together.
The list of things that he loved, was so much longer and the things that he disliked. He loved the art of making a deal, and seeing businesses grow, He would be thinking of new ways to start businesses and bless other people. This influenced him to start McRen contracting in Calgary. There were many highs and lows of running a business in Calgary through all the years, but Ron was blessed with an optimistic outlook, and behind every bust he knew there was a boom waiting to happen! Dad was not afraid of taking chances, and working, and doing physical things that most people would be scared to do. Like walking out to the edge of the crane without a safety harness on. Behind every visionary entrepreneur, there needs to be someone who looks after everything else, and Sally was that person. She looked after the house, and the children, and social activities, and fed him the best gluten-free food, lots of it grown in her big garden. Sally also covered Ron in prayers, for physical and mental health, all the days of his life.
He loved his children, adored his grandchildren, and thought his great grandsons were the best and brightest children on the planet! He also was a dog lover all his life, loving not only all the dogs that came through the McGregor house, but his children’s dogs as well!
He was blessed with many good friendships with men who had the same work ethic that he did. He liked nothing better than to shoot the breeze with his friends, hearing what their newest ideas were.
He also was an avid music lover, especially listening to classical music while he worked on projects in his garage, he loved big band music, and especially loved attending Handel’s Messiah every Christmas. Even though he was not blessed with a wonderful singing voice, he enjoyed singing hymns and songs from musicals.
One of the greatest blessings in his life, was trusting in Jesus in 1976, and learning to walk in the peace and love of God. Surely goodness and mercy was with him all the days, and now he is enjoying life with Jesus, and working in that awesome garage in Heaven!
He will be loved and forever missed by his wife, Sally of 58 years; children, Brian (Cheryle), Kevin, Dave (Laureen), Kathy (Mark) and Janice; many grandchildren; three great grandsons; his sister, Minnie, and his brother, Bob. He was predeceased by his brothers, Everett and Gregor; son-in-law, Brent and daughter-in-law, Gerda.
The McGregor family would especially like to thank Dr Bockmuehl for all his care above and beyond for our Dad. We would also like to thank Dr. Price, who first diagnosed dad’s celiac disease and made his life better. The last year of Ron’s life was made so much more comfortable by the truly wonderful home care assistants who came everyday and who helped out Mom and Dad in so many ways. You know who you and what a blessing you were and we thank you.
Ron’s homecoming to be with Jesus will be celebrated at RockPointe Bowridge Church (12 Bowridge Drive NW, Calgary, AB – across from COP Park) on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11:00 am with luncheon to follow. Interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Service will be live streamed at Live Stream Link page. Gifts in memory of Ron may be made to the RockPointe Church Compassion Fund
