Obituary for Robert Kenneth McKean

McKean Robert (Bob) Kenneth
March 5, 1939 – May 19, 2021

Dad we love you and you will always be in our hearts,

We lost you on Wednesday May 19th, 2021 at Rockview General Hospital in Calgary, AB.

Born in Miniota, MB to Alexander and Mary (Beard) McKean, Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sharon (Dales) McKean of Calgary; children, Kevin of Peterborough, ON, Lynda of Calgary, AB, and Mark (Tara) of Anola, MB; grandchildren, Sarah, Braxton, Lauren, Andrew, Ryan, and Tiana; siblings, Charlie, Reiny and Wilbur (Carolyn). He was an Uncle to countless nieces and nephews; Brother-in-Law and all-around friend to many!

You leave a legacy behind.

He enrolled in the RCMP in 1961 and then left in 1963 to begin a 34-year career in the Canadian Armed Forces. First stationed in Clinton, ON where he met his beautiful bride. Married in 1964 and then off to see the world. He was next stationed in Marville, France and in the years to follow would be station in the cities of Lahr, Germany, Edmonton, AB, Trenton, ON, Winnipeg, MB before in 1994 retiring to Kelowna BC, to ski, make wine and enjoy the heat of the Okanogan Valley. Finally in August 2020, we encouraged him to move to Calgary, AB so he could spend more time with family.

Dad loved to travel the globe; while in the military he completed a South Pacific Tour, Round the World Tour and a chilly two month stay in Alert NWT. While in Europe as a family he instilled the travel bug into all of his children by carting us all around the continent in a green Peugeot station wagon pulling a trailer. A special memory for us all was in Switzerland. After setting up camp we headed out on an adventure, we climbed a steep hill tree by tree to the top. Once to the top we turned and slid all the way down the slope hooting and hollering in excitement. Once back at camp we were approached by the farmer who owned the “crops” that we had just flattened with our sliding. After some negotiations Dad handed over some money and we scurried away and hid for the rest of the night. Once retired, the travels continued with lots of world cruising, South Pacific, Caribbean, both coasts of North America, and the Panama Canal. Hawaii and Vegas were the favourite of all.

Not bad for a small-town prairie boy. Growing up the youngest of four brothers we are surprised he survived the shenanigans of his youth.

Dad we will always remember you for your constant cheeky smile and witty jokes, for all the decks and the little Red Barn Sheds that you built. You could fix anything with a toothpick and a hammer, and your red wine was amazing. We were always amazed at your financial ability to know right down to the penny what you had in your account. Your “IF” books never failed you.

You will forever be in our hearts.

No service is planned. He will be buried at the Miniota Cemetery in Miniota, MB.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Veteran’s Food Bank, Calgary Poppy Fund or The Canadian Cancer Society.
