Obituary for Richard Martin Thompson

Richard (Rick) Martin Thompson
November 1, 1947 - January 27, 2024

It is with profound sadness that the family of Richard (Rick) Martin Thompson announce his passing after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 76.

Rick was born in Calgary, the 6th child of Gordon and Evelyn Thompson of Okotoks, Alberta. Rick was a hardworking and fun-loving man; always laughing and being the prankster. If it was your birthday, be prepared to get a cream pie in the face!

Rick had several occupations over his lifetime working for the railroad in British Columbia, building houses in the Yukon and all over Alberta, having his own construction company with his brother Jim and later with his friend Dennis, and working for Kristian Electric repairing overhead cranes and shop maintenance. He went to Lesser Slave Lake and fell in love with the area. Rick built himself a beautiful 6-bedroom home that he was extremely proud of. At this time, he worked setting up oil field camps and later worked for Husky Oil as a well operator until retirement. Rick loved quadding with family and friends, wood working, and building Mumbly Boards and funeral urns for family. Rick was very caring and always willing to help those in need.

Rick will be remembered by his brothers, Bill (Fran), Bob (Anna), Jim (Dorothy), Chuck, and Don (Randi); two daughters; Sheri (Gord) and Jacqueline; four grandchildren, 2 great-grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rick was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Evelyn; sisters, Betty and Joyce; brother, Steve; sister-in-law, Mona; and his nephews, Tony, Scott, Sheldon, and Dale.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Cedars Villa Extended Care for their compassion and excellent care of Rick over the past year.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Rick did not want a Funeral; however, a Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Chateau Estates Community Centre (1101 – 84 Street NE, Calgary, AB).
