Obituary for Rena Nagase (Kato)

怜奈は3年ほど前から療養中でしたが8月21日に享年39歳で永眠しました。
闘病中もいつも前向きで最期まで生きる希望を捨てずに本人も家族も回復を
信じていましたが力尽き、最期は夫(長瀬道広)と5人の子供達(林太郎、理紗、未花、咲良、芽依)に見守られながら安らかに旅立ちました。
怜奈は3人兄妹の末っ子として、茨城県で生まれ、幼少期からスポーツに打ち込みバレボールでは中学生の時に全日本選抜に選ばれたこともありました。明治大学商学部在学中からアジア諸国への旅行を始め、食文化の違い・豊かさに感銘を受け、各国で料理学校に通いました。卒業後はエプソンに就職後、兼ねてから興味のあった食の道へと進むことを決め、フードコーディネーターの資格を取り、レストランの再建業務に従事、その後2005年に来加しました。バンクーバーでマクロビオティックシェフ、映画監督のパーソナルシェフ、撮影クルーのケータリング業を経て、世界トップテンシェフにも選ばれたレストランオーナー、ミハエル・スタッドランダー氏に師事し、料理人としてのキャリアを積みました。その後、2007年に結婚し、一男四女の五児の母になりましたが第五子を妊娠中に乳がんが発覚し、そこから長い闘病生活が始まりました。治療をしながらも無事に第五子を産むことができました。
病気が進行した後もバレーボールやバドミントンを楽しんだり、ピアノも17年ぶりに再開したりと、全てのことに精力的に全力で取り組んでいました。周りの人たちは、怜奈が病気だということをすっかり忘れていたと思います。
本当に料理が好きで、暇さえあればキッチンに立って何かを作っていました。家でパーティーになれば、何品も手際良く作り、人を喜ばせるのが生きがいだったんだと思います。毎日の食事もいつも栄養にも気が配られ美味しい料理を出してくれました。子供達は今でも「お母さんの料理が食べたい」とよく言っています。
謙虚な性格で、人に注目されるのもあまり好まない面もありましたが、持ち前のバイタリティで人の目を惹きつけていつも人の輪の中心にいました。常に笑いを追求していて家庭にはいつも笑いが溢れていました。周りを笑わすのが好きでいつも怜奈の周りには人が集まっていました。
怜奈の存在感は大きく、日々いなくなったことを実感し、これから寂しくなりますが、家族、友人の中でこれからもずっと忘れられない存在でいてくれると思います。
怜奈の最後のお別れのためのViewingの時間を9月5日(土)に設けました。

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Rena Nagase on Friday, August 23rd, 2020 at the age of 39. She left peacefully at the Foothills medical centre surrounded by family -- her husband Michi and their children. Rena was the beloved wife of Michi for 13 years, and the loving mother of their five children: Rintaro, Lisa, Mika, Sara, and May.
Rena was born the youngest of three children on October 17th, 1980 in Ibaraki, Japan to Naomi and Moriyasu Kato. During childhood she was very athletic and enjoyed playing sports. She was chosen as a member of the national volleyball team when she was in junior high school.
Rena had a great passion for cooking. She travelled to various Asian countries as a backpacker while attending Meiji University. The diversity of the food culture inspired her. She attended cooking schools in these countries to learn more about various cuisines. After graduating from University, she spent several years as a food consultant for a struggling restaurant undergoing a major overhaul. Then she moved to Vancouver, BC in 2005. She worked as a chef at a restaurant specializing in macrobiotic cuisine, as a personal chef, and as a caterer to movie crews. Finally, she gained an apprenticeship with world ranking chef Michael Stadtländer.
Rena and Michi married in 2007. She became the mother of five children. It was during the pregnancy with her fifth child that she was diagnosed with cancer. In spite of undergoing difficult cancer treatments, she gave birth to a baby girl, May, in 2017.
Rena had a great sense of humour and always made people around her laugh. Her personality attracted people, and she was always in the centre of the crowd.
We have all lost a huge part of our lives and we will remember her forever. She will be missed tremendously by family and friends.
We will hold a viewing to say farewell to Rena on Saturday, September 5, 2020.
Time: 10:00AM - 1:00PM and 3:30PM - 7:30PM.
