Ron was predeceased by his wife Diane in May 2020, his father in 1989, mother in 1969, and siblings Hilda, Edwin, Robert, Gordon, & Harold (Harry).

Ron was born in Hanna, Alberta to Louis & Nora Weich and raised in the Scapa area attending the nearby one room country school until the 8th grade.

On April 28, 1951 Ron married Diane Marie Verstrepen in Drumheller, Alberta. They had 5 children: Elaine (1952), Allan (1957), Greg (1958), Cheryl (1959) and Darren (1960).

Ron spent most of his working life in the Pipeline Construction and Drilling Industry. He held tickets as a Heavy Duty Mechanic and Welder. Over the years he work for various pipeline construction companies and held many different job titles: truck driver, equipment operator, superintendent, and technical inspector.

The family moved around Alberta in the earlier years. When it was time for the oldest child to start school, they settled in Calgary, AB, purchasing their first home in Forest Lawn and several years later a new home in Varsity Acres. The family spent summers with Ron at the various pipeline job locations. In 1973, Ron purchased a machining and welding shop business in Three Hills, AB which was the beginning of Weich Industries Ltd. Diane, and two boys, Greg and Darren moved to Three Hills, AB, while the other three remained in Calgary. Ron ran his business for about 15 years before returning to the pipeline industry as a Technical Inspector, until his retirement.

Over the years Ron became well-known for his undeniably strong work ethic and perseverance throughout his career. In January of 1962, Ron was involved in one of Canada’s worst pipeline explosions near Edson, AB. He was fortunate to survive and it took many months in hospital to recover, showing everyone what a fighter he was.

Ron was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Calgary, AB followed by the Faith Lutheran Church in Sundre, AB. In 2013, Ron and Diane chose to move to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Community in Calgary for their remaining years.

Ron always wanted to fly and after moving to Three Hills earned his private pilot’s license. He was a long-time active member of the Three Hills Flying Club, Three Hills Elks Club, and Pioneer Acres in Irricana, AB. After retirement, he became very involved in the Legion and the Museum Society in Three Hills.

In the retirement years, Ron and Diane enjoyed family camp-outs and traveling. They flew to Hawaii and Barbados, cruised to Alaska, spent numerous winters in Arizona and traveled Canada from coast to coast, stopping along the way to visit family and friends.

Spending time with family, especially the little ones, brought many smiles to Ron in his later years. He will be forever loved and missed.

The family wishes to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Prince of Peace Harbour for their support and kind compassionate care of our Dad.

Due to provincial health restrictions, the interment and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary or to a charity of your choice.
