Obituary for Peter Rudolf Gubitz

Peter Rudolf Gubitz
October 10, 1931 – May 8, 2023

After living a full and happy life, Peter passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Bow Crest Long Term Care Center at the tender age of 91. Peter was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands to Jean and Aleida Gubitz.

Peter is survived by his brother, Ilja (Susan); son, Gord (Don); daughter, Karen (John); and his beloved granddaughters, Gillian and Breanne. Peter was predeceased by his parents; brother, Georg; sisters, Joann and Diny and the love of his life for 56 years, his wife, Mary.

Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1963, Peter made his living as a stop-motion animator; he also served in the Dutch army and was an avid speedskater - winning many awards.

Peter moved to Calgary soon after arriving in Canada. He attended SAIT to obtain his drafting diploma and had a successful career in the oil industry until his retirement.

Peter loved to spend time outdoors hiking, camping, golfing, and cross-country skiing with Mary. He was a DIY guy and could build or repair most anything. He volunteered at the North Family YMCA in various swimming programs and was a great supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s hobbies and interests.

In his retirement, Peter took up lawn bowling with Mary. They spent many hours playing, organizing tournaments and traveling the world together seeking out new opponents.

Most of all, Peter loved to laugh and tell stories and (often terrible) dad jokes and puns to anyone who would listen. His smile lit up a room.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bow Crest who provided first-class care for Peter for the past three years. Your kindness and compassion were a blessing.

The family will be having a private Memorial Service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
