Obituary for Patricia Bridget Ukrainetz (Rooney)

Patricia Ukrainetz
August 2nd, 1931 - March 30th, 2022

Patricia Bridget Ukrainetz, of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years. She will be dearly missed by her husband Ehor; their six children, Teresa, Paul, Veronica, Michael, Nadia, and Philip, their children-in-laws, Jerry, Susan, Jen, Kevin, and Sandra; and all their grandchildren: Katya, Graham, Sean, Neil, Brooke, Tyler, Lukas, Jake, Noah, NoahD, Sadie, Kate, Josh, Amy, and Sarah. She is preceded in death by her younger sister Kathleen and brother Dermot.

Patricia was born in Kenton district in northwest London, England, to Alice (Dillon) and Patrick Rooney. She grew up during World War II and the following decade of rationing and rebuilding. Patricia (or Pat to her Canadian family and friends, Patsy to her British family and friends, and Micky to her British teacher colleagues) earned her bachelor's degree and teaching certification with triple qualifications in mathematics, English, and French. She was a math teacher for several years while her friends were getting married and starting families.
Pat decided to set out on a grand adventure to travel and work in countries around the globe.

She left England in 1959 for a teaching assignment in Victoria, B.C. where she met Ehor Ukrainetz, stationed on the island as a navy officer. They were married July 8, 1961, and Teresa arrived the next summer. Pat and Ehor moved back to Ehor's home grounds in Edmonton, where Paul, Veronica, and Mike were born. In 1967, they packed into an International Travelall and drove across Canada to meet her newly immigrated sister Kath with husband Michael and Pat's beloved nephews, Simon, Damien, and Matthew. The extended family of eleven camped their way back west to start new lives in Calgary. Coakeleys moved east to Ottawa, but Calgary became the permanent home to the Ukrainetz family, soon completed by the appearance of Nadia and Phil.

Pat loved her family, travel, theatre, crosswords, sudoku, and books - she was never without a book in hand, and her dearest friends came from her book clubs. Pat managed the house, kids, and finances; supported her mountain man husband's adventures; and instilled character, compassion, and curiosity in her children, all while maintaining her own interests and identity. She skied with the little ones until they graduated from the bunny hill, drove the shuttle vehicle on family canoe trips, organized the provincial Junior Olympics archery program, and became a national-level archery judge although she never shot an arrow herself. When Phil was in kindergarten, Pat returned to education as a part-time community school coordinator and math tutor then became a full-time ESL teacher, where she truly found her teaching heart. Pat attended UofC part-time for ESL teacher education so everyone studied together around the dining room table.

Pat was a faithful, thoughtful Catholic and an active member of Holy Spirit Parish. She was a proud Canadian but never forgot her British origins and helped her children connect to their Ukrainian roots. Pat will be missed by many and be forever in our hearts.

Our family is grateful for the tender care Mom received at Amica Aspen Woods and Brittania. We are also thankful for the loving support of her many friends, especially Shirley Brander and Pat Peach.
