Obituary for Nylla Branley

Nylla Branley
September 5, 1938 – December 1, 2022

Nylla passed away peacefully in her home on December 1, 2022, at the age of 84. Lovingly remembered by her children Darryl Branley, Dean Branley (Heather) and Dawn Charryl Kloster; and by her grandchildren Colton Lawrence, Grace Kloster & Ashton Branley. Nylla was a kind & supportive mom, and a loving & devoted grandma.

Nylla also leaves behind her sister Dorothy, brother-in-law Orrest, her nephew Douglas and her nieces Elise (Aaron) & Heidi (Mike), Laura (John) & Cindy (Bob). Nylla was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald (Don) Branley on October 22, 1998. After his passing, Nylla moved to and remained independent in her beautiful home on the southside of Cochrane where she enjoyed her view over-looking Cochrane and the foothills of the Rockies.

Nylla grew up in Medicine Hat and Calgary. As a teenager she met Don in Calgary, through friends. They married in 1962. In 1977, Don, Nylla and their 3 children relocated to Cochrane from Calgary. Nylla worked at Food Master in the bakery, The Cochrane This Week as reception, and she worked as a travel agent at Signature Travel and Integrity Travel. She loved working locally, being able to interact and meet new people was something Nylla truly enjoyed.

Nylla’s greatest passion was cross-stitch. She was an award-winning artist, winning a number of awards including 1st and 2nd place at the Calgary Stampede and many awards for her cross-stitch work at the Bearspaw Community Fair. Nylla often joked that she didn’t have time to get sick, she had too much cross-stich to do! Nylla was proud of her contribution as one of the owners & operators of The Stitching Corner by NyGaBe, a needlework shop located in Cochrane where she met many stitching friends.

Nylla had many creative talents, sewing, quilting, knitting, and crafting. She also proudly embraced her Metis heritage, gathering what information she needed to understand and embrace her family history and Indigenous culture.

Nylla was known to start her day with her A&W family, where she went every day, 364 days a year. Sharing a coffee and her life with the staff, the regulars and many others who stopped by or were just traveling through town. Mom loved her A&W family and met many of her lifelong friends there.

A Celebration of Nylla’s Life: A casual come-and-go gathering will be held in Nylla’s honor at Ducks on the Roof (320 3rd Ave, Cochrane, AB) on Sunday December 18, 2022, from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Please join us for light refreshments. (Unfortunately, this venue cannot accommodate children).

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Helping Hands Society of Cochrane or Cochrane & Area Humane Society.
