Obituary for Norman Clifford Nelson

Norman Clifford Nelson

Born in Unity, Saskatchewan on September 21st, 1924
Died peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on March 9th, 2022

Norman is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Sharon Post (Allan); daughter, Wendy Weevers (Paul); son, Rick Nelson (Karen); and daughter, Lori Eslinger (Dwain); along with grandchildren, Brad Post, Heather Nelson, Kyle Nelson, Megan Eslinger, Jessica Eslinger, Erika Austin-Niven, Erin Weevers, and Kirsten Fladhamer; and great-grandchildren, Joe, Harper, Ellery, Caeden, Aurelia and Freya. Norman’s wife, Beatrice “Rita”, pre-deceased him in 1993 along with his sisters, Gerry Lee in 2013, Evelyn Leedham in 2012 and grandson, Daryl Post in 2019.

His parents, Erik and Anna Nelson, emigrated from Sweden, homesteading in Minnesota, USA and Cherhill, Alberta. They moved to Unity, Saskatchewan where Norman was born and later to a farm in the surrounding area. Norman had a great many stories about growing up on the farm.

Norman served as a leading aircraftman in the RCAF from enlistment March 13, 1943 to discharge on March 9, 1944. After discharge he followed his parents to Nelson B.C. It was there that he and Rita met while working in the same grocery store, he behind the butcher’s counter and she as a clerk.

After marrying Rita in 1950, the couple moved to Calgary where he worked as a long-distance truck driver and later found employment with Burns Meats Ltd. He worked there first as a meat cutter and then as a machinist. They lived in Bowness from 1955, raising their four children. Norman sold the house after living there for 63 years.

Golfing, curling, fishing, cribbage, family and tinkering with anything mechanical were his passions. Crib was always played for “2 bits” with games going on while keeping an eye on the tip of an anchored fishing rod. He enjoyed playing the slots at the casino. Cooking was also a source of enjoyment, and he made a mean lobster bisque. Both his independence and determination were an inspiration to us all. He continued curling and driving into his mid 90’s.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Fanning Centre, Points West assisted Living in Cochrane, the Colonel Belcher Long Term Care facility and the Rockyview Hospital for their care.

Norman will be remembered with a family Celebration of Life this summer. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Norman, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
