Obituary for Moe Hawrysh

Miroslaw (Moe) Hawrysh
November 28, 1936 - December 27, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Moe Hawrysh at Father Lacombe Care Centre in Calgary, AB on December 27, 2019. He was born to Dmytro and Mary Hawrysh in Aberdeen, SK on November 28, 1936. Moe leaves behind to cherish his memory his children Dawna, Richard, Kelly (Raylene) of Calgary, AB, Robert (Amanda) of Nanaimo, BC, Dana of Winnipeg, MB and his sister Norma of Ottawa, ON. He is remembered fondly by his two grandchildren Carly (Shaun) and Jessica. He is predeceased by his loving wife Yvonne, parents Dmytro and Mary and brother Nester.

As his father was a teacher, Moe started school at the age of three and that was the beginning of his journey of life-long learning. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Engineering with a specialty in Electrical Engineering in 1957. He moved to Regina shortly after graduation and worked for SaskPower for a short time, and then SaskTel where he retired after 35 years of service. His move to Regina landed him and two other engineering buddies in a house across the street from the Hainstock residence, and there Moe met Yvonne. They were married for 56 years and had 5 children. Moe went back to University to finish his Master’s degree in Engineering, but decided it was more important to become active in his children’s sporting teams and other activities. Moe always enjoyed sports and was an avid fastball player, playing for the semi-pro team, the Royals, in Regina in the early 60s. He coached his sons in hockey and followed his children in other sports they played including volleyball, basketball, soccer, fastball and football. After Moe’s retirement he became very involved in the parish of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Sobor, Regina. He served as the Treasurer for a number of years until moving to Calgary in 2006. After their move to Calgary, Moe and Yvonne avidly began following Carly and Jessica’s many sporting events. He enjoyed working around his yard and gardening during the summer and loved playing cribbage and Wii games. While he lived at Auburn Heights Retirement Residence he made many friends, and you could often find him playing games with his friends, family or neighbors. Moe enjoyed his walks with Cobaka, his Sheltie, and the two of them could be seen walking around the neighborhood throughout the day.

We will forever miss Dad and Grandpa’s kind heart and quick wit. His joke telling was humorous in itself with his off-beat sense of humor and missed punch lines. But most of all, we’ll miss his kind and caring heart and the light he shone on those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Choice Memorial (105 – 4715 13th Street NE, Calgary, AB) on January 11, 2020 at 11:00 am.
