Obituary for Mayrilen Diane Rieger

Mayrilen Diane Rieger
August 20, 1945 - December 25, 2023

Mayrilen passed away at the Southwood Hospice, Calgary, Alberta, on Christmas Day 2023, at the age of 78 years, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mayrilen was born to John and Magdalena Rieger, in Medicine Hat, and the family farm was located in the area of Schuler. Mayrilen had two older brothers. After a tragic farm accident, she lost her dad, at the age of two years old. The family then moved to Medicine Hat.

There were many hardships and challenges throughout her growing up years, but Mayrilen found ways to have fun. She loved singing on the front step at home and going for walks with her dear friend, Wilma – a friend for 71 years. She enjoyed visiting and repairing granaries with cousins at their farm in Manyberries. She especially liked that after lunch she got to watch Howdy Doody on their TV.

Mayrilen’s love of singing continued. As a teenager/young adult she was a singer in a band. Throughout her life, she enjoyed singing in many different ways including numerous choirs and concerts, while driving in the car, as a special guest, as a praise and worship leader, at church services, at the Gospel Jamboree in Medicine Hat, and even at Open Mic Night as she recovered from chemotherapy.

Sewing was another of Mayrilen’s many talents. She sewed clothing and furnishings for the family for many years. Mayrilen also enjoyed learning and taking on new challenges in her workplaces. She studied C.I.T.T. logistics and also became an expert accountant. In 1994, she went back to school to obtain her High School Matriculation; this even included Physics 30 in which she consistently obtained A’s.

Mayrilen had a generous heart and a great willingness to help when people were in need. She made great sacrifices for her family. Mayrilen wasn’t one to sit idle and enjoyed volunteering for the City Light News newspaper, political involvement, reading, playing games, acting in theatre productions, having family and friends over for dinner – or her favorite food groups of dessert and coffee, gardening, and doing a little bit of travel here and there.

Mayrilen is survived by her three children, Veronica, Laureen, and Clayton (Kathy); and four grandchildren, Angel, Ben (Katie), Sarah, and Abigael (Stefano). Mayrilen was predeceased by her two brothers, Rubin and Gordon (Rose). She will be dearly missed.

Mayrilen and her family would like to express their gratitude to the very gifted staff at the Southwood Hospice for their compassionate and kind care for her during her final four ½ weeks of life here on earth.
