Obituary for Martha Tereza D'Souza

Martha Teresa D’Souza
09 September 1935 – 19 November 2020

Our mother Martha Tereza D'Souza, age 85, has peacefully passed away to be at eternal peace with our Lord.
Our mum lived a beautiful life full of abundant blessings. Born in picturesque Goa, India. Then in the 60s migrated to Karachi, Pakistan to marry Dad (Jerome), and later in 2001 migrated to Canada where she spent the rest of her life. Mum had been blessed to experience this fulfillment of life in these 3 parts of the world.
Mum had 5 children, whom she always referred to as her Branches, and she the “Tree”. Mum loved her family and would protect her kids, stood up for us when in times of difficulties, or danger, and always took up for her kids no matter what and how the situation enfolded.

Mum had a sense of humour that could entertain anyone with her succinct dialogues and witty jokes. She was a cooking aficionado of Goan & Pakistani dishes, and had other skills like intricate embroidery, making crepe paper flowers, and loved making conversations, where she can retrieve data from her 50 to 60 years elephant memory. She enjoyed some good laughs and loved to share stories of yester days. Not forgetting anyone’s birthdays, from families, cousin, friends and even the neighbours, she would say “Oh, it’s this person’s birthday today”

Burgundy, a colour favourite in dressing and with love for jewellery, especially gold, she would dress for the occasion. For those who knew her will recall her famous words “Old is gold and cannot be sold but given free” and “A rouge that I hate, and an honest man that I love” which complemented her mischievous smile. A lady of multiple talents, she cooked, sewed, read books, danced, embroidered and made the most sumptuous Christmas sweets. Her talent kept growing as she took up life’s new challenges, where she learnt to speak several languages at a basic level. Although Konkani (a language spoken in Goa) being her mother tongue, mum also spoke Marathi, English, Portuguese, Urdu and bits of Tamil, which assisted her in integrating into a multicultural society with people from all walks of life.

Mum was (and will be) loved by her husband Jerome, with whom she would share a ‘romantic glass’ a drink of whiskey on occasions. Besides being a loving wife to dad, mum was also a loving Nana to not only her own grandchildren, but to other young kids who lovingly also called her Nana. To everyone who crossed paths with her, she was Mum, Aunty Martha, Nana and Nana Mona to family and friends.

Mum left this world peacefully in her sleep while at the hospital in Calgary, Canada.

She was the beloved mother of Belinda (Norman), June (Manuel), Renee (Gerald), Ronald (Cerrina), Thomas (Lisa) and beloved grandmother to all her grandchildren, whom she adored. Martha was predeceased by her husband Jeronimo D’Souza (Jerome), her parents Tomas & Escolastika DeSouza, her sister Lourdes Dias, and Brother Elias DeSouza.

We bid farewell to our Mum with a Funeral Mass at St Thomas Moore Church, Calgary, Canada followed by a burial at Queen's Park Cemetery.

Due to the pandemic, the family has decided to have a private Funeral Mass service with the immediate family only. We would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, prayers, condolences, and support. We request that you pray for her soul and keep her in your thoughts, as she would.

Condolences, memories, photos & videos may be shared and viewed on Martha D’Souza's memorial page at www.choicememorial.com.

“MORE PRECIOUS WAS THE LIGHT IN YOUR EYES, THAN ALL THE ROSES IN THE WORLD”

Rest peacefully, Mum

You will always remain the epitome of a Mother to the many hearts you’ve touched.

With Love,
Your Family
