Obituary for Marilyn Jean Kohn (Coates)

MARILYN JEAN KOHN
October 10, 1938 – July 8, 2020

Marilyn J. Kohn, 81, passed with grace and courage July 8, 2020, at her home in Calgary, Alberta surrounded by her immediate family. She was born October 10, 1938, in Drumheller, Alberta, the daughter of Christopher Ernest Thomas (Ernie) and Alice (Twiddle) Coates. Growing up, she lived on farms in Delia and Rowley. Her family moved to Calgary in 1951. Marilyn married her soulmate Ronald H. M. Kohn October 20, 1956.

Family always came first with Marilyn. She was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother extraordinaire. She was very proud of her children and was always happiest when her grandchildren were near. She loved to cook, camp, and play BINGO. The stories of the water-fights she usually initiated are legendary. She gained the attention of her future husband, Ron, by turning the garden hose on him. She spent many wonderful vacations with Ron and family traveling initially in a tent, tent trailer, fifth wheel and finally a motorhome throughout Canada and the USA. She also enjoyed trips to England, Australia, Fiji, and Mexico. Marilyn loved her BINGO, often playing 20+ cards at a time. Her fun-loving, caring nature nurtured many souls and kept lifelong friends, many who considered her their angel on Earth. She also spent many years tirelessly taking care of the needs of her elderly mother and friends. We were so very blessed to have her in our lives.

In addition to her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy, in 1969. Surviving in addition to her husband, Ron, are her daughters Kathy Trofin (Jerry), Rhonda Pomfrey (Don), both of Calgary; son Kevin Kohn (Joanne) of Victoria, BC; six grandchildren, Britt Kohn, Shaela Fitzgerald-Kohn, Jenna Trofin, Jesse Trofin, Jadyn Pomfrey, Jake Pomfrey; one great grandchild, Marilyn Kalef-Kohn; brother-in-law Ken Kohn (Lois); sisters-in-law Rosamond Kohn, Dorothy Kohn; many nieces and nephews.

A Family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember Marilyn in a special way may make a donation in her name to the Calgary Health Trust in support of Unit 46 by accessing the link: https://www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca/ and filling out the tribute information at the bottom with Marilyn’s name.

Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff of Foothills Hospital Oncology and Radiation Departments, Units 36 & 46, Foothills Pain Clinic, the Palliative Home Care teams, Calgary EMS and mom’s community of friends and relatives supporting her through her journey. Our family wishes to express sincere gratitude for the many displays of kindness, prayers and sympathies extended during this time.
