Obituary

Malhiot, Doril (Doris) Rosa Marie

Doril (Doris) Rosa Marie Malhiot, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on August 18, 2020. She was predeceased by her parents, Clara (Levesque) and Andre Baril, son-in-law Karel Sedlecky, great-grandson Kade Sedlecky, her brothers Lawrence, Victor and Joseph, and her sisters Alma, Germaine and Cecile. Doril leaves to mourn her children - Joanne, Denis, Elaine (Rick Kessy and grandchildren Dillon, Conor and Madeleine) and Karen (grandson Myles, and great grandchild Owyn), and her sister Emelia (Henri), and sisters-in-law, Monique (Victor) and Alice (Joseph) and brother-in-law (Peter Burhoff) and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind friends in Kelowna.

Doril was born May 15, 1930 and grew up on the family farm in Prud’homme, Saskatchewan. Her father, Andre Baril, passed away at a young age, leaving his wife and family on the farm during the tough times of the Dirty Thirties.

Mom loved to sing (alto) and entered many competitions as a teenager. After high school, Mom worked in Regina at the Legislative Assembly. She married Jerry Malhiot in 1950. They farmed in Wolseley and Montmartre. Her siblings, Alma, Germaine and Victor lived nearby and that lead to many family meals and gatherings with all the cousins. Mom always had a large garden and she was more interested in practical vegetables than flowers. She spent many hot summer days canning and freezing garden produce. We have happy memories of coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked bread and home-made soup.
In 1979, the family moved to Westbank. Here also, Mom continued singing in the church choir. She loved the hot weather in Kelowna and the wonderful fruit and vegetables that grew abundantly there. Her freezer always had a winter supply of strawberries and blueberries. In 2014, Mom moved to Alberta where she lived with Joanne.

Mom was a loving mother to all of her children first and foremost and was the glue that held our family together. She treasured her children and always provided unconditional love and support to each of them. Mom was fearless in standing up for her kids as their advocate no matter how tough the situation. She was a peacemaker, kind, and gentle. Mom never wanted to put other people out, or give them extra work. No one is perfect but Mom always strove to be better and her actions spoke volumes. She was also our teacher, nurse, counselor, advocate, confidant and a very good friend. Mom worked to be optimistic about everything, always looking at the bright side of things. She greeted people with a warm and loving smile and a hug.
Mom overcame great obstacles in her life by clinging to her faith and was the embodiment of her favorite prayer, which was the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. Through her, her children knew what strength and resilience looked like. She had beautiful blue eyes and a mischievous and contagious smile. Mom enjoyed sharing a laugh and had a wonderful sense of fashion style. She loved to sew, knit, crochet, cross stitch, and complete Diamond Dot paintings. She was the type of person who started a project and completed it to the end before she began something else, focusing on one thing at a time. Mom finished all the projects she started – she had great determination! She had no hesitation in ripping back her knitting if she saw an error, no matter how far back she had to go. Mom was an avid dancer and always enjoyed kicking up her heels, especially to country music.

A very special thank you to Dr. Van Wyk and the kind staff in Ward 82 in the Foothills Hospital who offered such compassionate care to Mom, keeping her comfortable during her last days.

During these troubled times of Covid-19, her funeral mass will be held in Calgary at a later date and her Celebration of Life will take place once Covid-19 travel restrictions are eased. Mom’s final resting place will be Kelowna, close to her own mother.

Heaven has a new angel but here on earth, Mom will be greatly missed, always loved and never forgotten. Until we meet again Mom, we will remember your favourite expression, “and we’ll take it as it comes".

No words can express our sorrow at the loss of our beloved mother.

Thank you from all of us, to you both, for your kind words. Mom and I spent many hours this summer sitting on the front deck in the shade of a large spruce in the front yard. Thanks for planting a tree in her memory. Hugs, Joanne
