Obituary for Margaret Lillian "Maggie" Grindell (Hambrook)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret Grindell (Hambrook) of Calgary, Alberta, on January 17, 2021, at the age of 82. Maggie passed peacefully with her son and grandson by her side after a number of years finding her way through her Dementia.

Maggie was predeceased by her parents Barclay and Lillian Hambrook, her sister Joy Froom (Ron) and Karen and David's father, Robert Grindell. She is survived by her children, David (Marlene) of Calgary, AB, Karen (Todd) Gallagher of Almonte, ON, who count themselves blessed to have had her as a mother and mother in law. Her precious grandchildren, Jayme of Calgary, AB, Liam, Aidan and Brennan, of Almonte, ON, and her brother Barclay Hambrook (Colleen) of Calgary, AB.

Maggie graduated from Western Canada High School and went on to work at IBM as a Data Entry Operator and eventually landed at Nortel Networks where she retired after 20 years of service. During her retirement years, Maggie travelled to many places - Thailand, Mexico, Southern US and her favourite place, Hawaii.

Maggie had a very tight-knit group of friends who became a huge extension of her family and a big part of her many adventures and experiences that she had throughout her life. She found drumming in her latter years and fell in love and it really was a profound experience to feed her spiritual side. One thing about Maggie, that everyone knew, was her love of music and her cats. You never messed with either of those two things. She was full of piss and vinegar, with her ‘expletive’ language, and will never be forgotten for her fighting spirit.

Maggie’s family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of Whitehorn Retirement Residence and Brentwood Intercare West, Sunnyside Unit. Everyone that cared for our mother was a huge part of her dementia journey and we can't say enough for the tenderness and care they gave her and us. There are stages with this disease, one that includes, gaining different definitions of family. Her caregivers fell into this category and we are forever grateful for their heartfelt, compassion and support.

As per Maggie's wishes, she will be cremated at Choice Memorial Crematorium. At this time, the family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date, (TBA). If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, a charity near and dear to Maggie's heart, or to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary .
