Obituary for Makrina Ek

Makrina Ek
July 11th, 1918 - Saturday, January 4th, 2020

Makrina (Marg) Ek was born July 11, 1918 in Calder, Saskatchewan and went home to be with the Lord on January 4, 2020, in Calgary, Alberta. A week short of 101 ½ years old.

Marg was predeceased by Ed, her husband of 53 years; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters. She leaves behind her sons Lindy (Starla) and Kerry (Barb); 5 grandchildren - Jalene, Amber, Jennessa, Jonah and Jacelyn; as well as Kerry Jr and Tracy, who came to be part of her immediate family. She is also survived by three brothers.

Marg was born into a large family of thirteen children. A challenging life on the prairies through the depression shaped and developed the strength in her that lasted throughout her 101 years.
In the 1930’s living in Winnipeg, she worked as a housekeeper. This helped pay for her Bible school tuition, as well as to send clothes to her three younger brothers who were living in Saskatchewan.

In Winnipeg, Marg also worked in an airplane factory helping to build airplanes for the war.
After Winnipeg, along with a friend, Marg went to Northern Manitoba as a missionary. The stay was short because of the extreme cold and the loneliness of the very northern region, and it was not safe for young women. The two travelled back to Saskatchewan as missionaries there.

In Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Marg met the love of her life, Ed. She told of the story seeing him leaning against a tree, and that it was “love at first sight”.

Moving to Calgary in 1955, Marg and her husband Ed raised their two sons, Lindy and Kerry.
She was a Sunday School teacher, foster parent, bookkeeper, talented seamstress, office manager for Ek Construction, a nursing aid, and owned and worked in a beauty salon. Along with being a devoted homemaker, mother, and wife, she loved her Lord with all her heart and she served others expressing that love.

She was laid to rest January 8, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta.

Donations in Marg’s memory can be made to the Canadian Bible Society.
