Obituary for Madeleine Celina Sharlow (Bonneville)

Madeleine Celina Sharlow
October 25th, 1920 - February 17th, 2023

Madeleine Celina Sharlow (nee Bonneville) was born in Lancaster, Ontario on October 25, 1920 and died on February 17, 2023 in Calgary, Alberta. She lived to 102 years old and was predeceased by her husband, Harold Sharlow, in 2005, and her eight siblings. Madeleine is survived by her sons, Mark (and Janice) of Calgary, and Paul (and Rose) of Airdrie; three grandchildren, Virginia, John (and Melissa) and Samantha (and Tristan); and five great-grandsons, Gavin, Leland, Dameon, Rayne, and Cohen.

Madeleine trained as a Registered Nurse and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health at the University of Ottawa. After working in public health in Nova Scotia, Madeleine relocated to Spirit River, AB to be a public health nurse. During that time she met her husband, Harold Sharlow, and they were married in 1953 and started their life in Calgary. Madeleine finished her nursing career in 1955 to be a homemaker, mother and supported Harold’s career with the Calgary Board of Education. Madeleine served in a variety of volunteer positions supporting seniors and the Calgary Public Library Outreach program for more than 40 years.

Madeleine liked playing cards with friends, hiking in the woods, and later she and Harold would canoe the rivers with groups of friends. She also had a special spot called “Lake O’Hara” and for years she and Harold would go there and stay in a cabin on the lake or in the main lodge. In 1967 they bought a small cabin in the Sundre area, which became her favourite place to sit in the sun and read books.

The family is very grateful to the nurses and physicians on Unit 53 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for the special care that Madeleine received in the last days of her life. Also, a special thank you to the staff at St. Marguerite Manor where Mom lived since 2015.

Madeleine asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Canadian Red Cross Society .

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church (711-37 Street NW) on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow.
