Obituary for Joan McEachern

Joan Loretta McEachern
February 17th, 1939 - Saturday, January 18th, 2020

Joan McEachern passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on January 18, 2020, at the age of 80. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 17, 1939. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 2014 and is survived by her son Scott (Debbie), daughter Tracy (Dave), and grandchildren Ashley (Nick) and Ryan.

Joan was the second of four children. She grew up in Edmonton and married Jim in 1958. They continued living in Edmonton near her parents until 1972 when they moved to Edson, AB.

Edson was a big change for her; a small town with lots of mud, rain and snow. Edson also had many wonderful people who would become lifelong friends. She spent 10 years in Edson. Her primary role was to manage the day-to-day functioning of the home, while Jim travelled for work during the week. While working part-time as a bookkeeper, she was also an active member of the Kinette Club, volunteering and helping in the community. They moved back to Edmonton when Scott and Tracy finished high school.

Joan enjoyed travelling and spending vacations in Jasper, Kalamalka Lake, Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, Mesa, and ’the farm’ near Carruthers, Saskatchewan. When Scott and his family moved to Minnesota in 1999, Joan and Jim made numerous road trips there, celebrating birthdays, watching the grandkids in school sports and concerts and getting to know the neighbours. In her later years, she enjoyed staying closer to home and going to the local Y daily, swimming in the pool and socializing with friends.

She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing everything from clothing to drapery to upholstery for furniture. She was also well known for her delicious cooking, especially the chocolate chip cookies, the fresh baked buns and unlimited jars of raspberry jam. She took pride in the homemade wine from JnJ winery, as the official taster and label maker and Jim as the vintner.

She and Jim loved to sing, dance and socialize. Joan will always be remembered for her amazing smile and positive attitude.

To honour her life, please consider donations to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories or YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.
