Obituary for Lonna Karen Kirkpatrick

Lonna Karen Kirkpatrick

Lonna Karen Kirkpatrick was born January 14, 1951, and passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the age of 71 from complications of Alzheimers disease

Lonna was born in Calgary and lived there for most of her life, with short absences in Red Deer, the Crowsnest Pass and Cambridge, England. She first met Alan, her husband of 38 years, at a Stampede party.

Lonna was always interested in art. Her first inspiration came from art lessons given to her by her beloved father, George. Sadly, her father died in his fifties after being debilitated by a heart attack and a series of strokes. However, he lived long enough to be introduced to her children Cory and Kari, surviving Kari’s birth by only a few months. While living in Cambridge, Lonna volunteered at an art gallery owned by her friend Rosemary.

Family was central for Lonna. She embraced the sprawling Kirkpatrick clan and established a family newsletter to document the family’s history, from its origins in the Caribou region of BC to current generations. She attended many family reunions over the years. Lonna was close to her siblings, Rhonda, Brian, Carol and especially her younger brother, George. Sadly, George and Carol predeceased her.

Lonna loved nature, especially autumn leaves, and took long walks through the forest when on vacation on Hornby Island. She enjoyed the company of several cats during her lifetime. She also loved literature, reading extensively, and had particular love of the works of A.S. Byatt.

Lonna obtained her BA in psychology while raising two young children and subsequently obtained certification as a gestalt therapist, followed by an MSc in psychology, completing her thesis on the effect of psoriasis on young women.

Lonna explored Europe extensively and, on one trip through France, was able to visit the gravesite of her uncle, who died in the last month of the First World War. Of course, the visit was described in her family newsletter.

Lonna is survived by her husband, Alan; her son, Cory (Sarah); daughter, Kari (Andre) and granddaughter, Veronica. Her mother, Inez and granddaughter, Scarlett predeceased her.

Special thanks are extended to the staff at Bethany Riverview, who cared for Lonna in her final years. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
