Obituary for Livia Maria Fekete (Lendvay)

Livia Maria Fekete (nee Lendvay)
November 22, 1938 – July 20, 2019

With deep sadness and love we announce the passing of Livia Maria Fekete at the age of 80. She was a truly remarkable woman. While we will forever feel her absence, our hearts remain filled with her love.

Livia was born in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, and came to Canada as a refugee with her parents and sisters after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Initially settling with her family in Toronto, Livia became a medical lab technician and embraced her new life as a Canadian. In May of 1962, a fateful card game with mutual friends introduced her to Tibor, a young Petroleum Engineer visiting Toronto from Calgary. After three days they decided their future would be together in Calgary, and after three months they were married and driving across the country to begin their lives together. As in all things, Livia knew what she wanted and wasted no time getting it.

Describing Livia is easy. She was the personification of elegance. She was graceful, impeccable, fierce and fabulous. She made everything she did seem effortless. She was a gourmet cook, fitness enthusiast and a tireless volunteer and philanthropist for the arts, in particular for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Livia loved to travel and indeed she and Tibor saw most of the world together. She loved tennis and played it well, as well as outdoor activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. For 17 years she was a volunteer Ski Friend, sharing her love and knowledge of the Rocky Mountains with countless visitors to Lake Louise. In recent years, she enjoyed hiking in the mountains with her fearless Tuesday Trekkies, whose love and support during her illness will be forever remembered.

The support Livia received during her illness came from far and wide – it overwhelmed her, and she was very grateful. We wish to acknowledge and thank all of those who made the time to reach out and share their love.

The family is planning a celebration of life for Livia this fall. Livia’s express wish was that her life be remembered with joy and that the many people who loved her would gather together to enjoy food, wine and music.

Livia is survived by Tibor, her beloved husband of 57 years, daughters Victoria (Joseph) and Klari (Sean), sisters Maria (Kalman) and Klara (Levente), niece Lilla (Marc), nephews Andrew and Laszlo (Laura), and their children.

For those wishing to pay tribute to Livia’s life, in lieu of flowers, donations in her name would be greatly appreciated and may be mailed in to:
