Obituary

Liam Scott Gillies
March 30, 1994 - March 18, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Liam Scott Gillies, just days shy of his 26th birthday. He is survived by his Dad Gord, his Mom Kandi McElary, sister Laura, and many loving relatives across the country.

We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful boy.

Liam was a mischievous rascal from the get go. With a twinkle in his eye he was up for anything and always in the middle of the mayhem. He loved to play and create games and his childhood was filled with laughter. He loved making people laugh. School for Liam was a time to gather with friends and start planning the next adventure. Often during class.

Liam was having a fantastic semester at Mount Royal University on the road to a Sociology degree. He had firmed up work plans for the summer and was looking forward to returning in the Fall.

Those of you close to Liam know of his struggles. At times his journey was difficult, but he never gave up hope of bringing harmony to his life. It never changed his caring and compassionate nature. He had depth and character and a sweetness that touched anyone who knew him. We cherish our time together, happy memories filled with laughter and quiet times just hanging out with a kind and sensitive soul.

A celebration of his life that impacted so many people will come sometime down the road.

Liam had a wonderfully generous spirit and heart. Right now in this upside down world there are many charities, groups and businesses that are struggling. If so desired, we would love it if you found a way to make a difference to one that is important to you.

When you do, think of Liam.

It would make him smile.

Liam....
What was it that made you so special to so many people?

We didn't see you often, maybe only once or twice a year, but when we met up it was as if we had been with you the day before. You had this great ability to connect with anybody, including us ..... age was no barrier.

You were always so respectful and the most pleasant person to talk with. You always brought something valuable to the conversation and your insightful, quirky sense of humour gave us many laughs together.

We're so sorry that you had so many battles to deal with during your precious young adult life. The battles are over, and you are at peace, leaving all of us to miss you so very very much.

There's a hole in our hearts that will never be filled.

Thank you for what was a sweet, fun and beautiful presence in our lives.
The world is a sadder and emptier place without you.

We're sure going to miss you, always

Dear Kandi, Gord & Laura,
We have been thinking of you several times a day for many days now, trying to put together words worthy of this space and your grief. Trevor and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Liam. The boys shared some wonderful times. Trevor spoke of the Grade 9 sailing trip as his best experience ever. As Trevor was dealing with a new medical condition I, the parent, was comforted knowing that Liam was with him in case anything went wrong. Other activities they shared included volleyball, racquet sports and mountain time to name a few. Liam has always been welcome at our place. Trevor has taken solace in sharing happy Liam stories with friends. I have read many of the condolences, all of which provide a clear picture of Liam. Your son had purpose in life, one that will be continued. On the eve of his birthday we send you this poem about a young man that will forever stay in our hearts. Take care of yourselves.

The Garden of Liam

An earth angel came upon us,
A precious life far too brief
One filled with quiet
Petals of chivalric intent
Shown in a little touch
To a park flower’s leaf.

His gentle soul grazed our lives
To an extent beyond notice.

With the planting of new seedlings
Let us branch on Liam’s essence
By infusing good deeds onto others
That stem from forests of kindness.

Gord, Kandi, and Laura. We are heartbroken to hear this news. Katie and Claire both had the privilege of knowing and working with Liam. Like everyone else who had this joy, they loved him! Please know that our hearts are present with yours ... now and always. With love abounding. xo Patti Morris
