Obituary for Leonardus Antonius Albertus Evers

Leonardus Antonius Albertus Evers (Leo)
January 2, 1925 - December 19, 2020

Leo Evers passed away peacefully at Brentwood Care Centre (BCC) in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday, December 19, 2020. He was 95 years old.

Leo was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Greetje) in 2010. Leo and Margaret were both born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. They married in 1948 and were together for 62 years. Leo’s thirst for adventure led them to live in British Borneo for 3 years. They immigrated to Canada in 1960 with three young daughters, aged 5 years, 2 years, and 3 months.

Leo is survived by his children, Miriam (Howard), Lydia (Ray), and Carla (Ben), and his grandchildren Sean, Joshua, Lani and Benjamin. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands.

Leo loved to listen to Beethoven, Pavarotti and concerts by André Rieu. In his later years, he took up playing the harmonica, as he did in his youth. This was a real treat for his daughters who heard him play it for the first time. Exercise was extremely important to Leo and he exercised almost every day. He could beat almost anyone at arm-wrestling, until the very end of his life.

Leo enjoyed a mental challenge. He played chess and was highly skilled in working with metal. He could fix anything that was broken. He used to say, “if Evers can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed.”

Leo was a man of strong character, an independent thinker with strong opinions. He had a rough edge about him, which softened as he grew older. He could be quite the charmer. Often, when he walked down the halls at BCC, he would say hello to everybody, yodel or dance with the staff. One staff member told us, “Leo was a big personality in a little body. He had everybody’s heart.”

Leo will be remembered fondly by many and we are relieved that he is at peace with his loving Greetje.

The family expresses our deepest appreciation to Tanishka and Inger, who provided Leo with many hours of loving care and companionship in his last three years. We also greatly appreciate the nursing staff, Dr. Jed, health care aides and recreation staff at BCC for dancing, singing, joking, comforting and caring for him.

A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, February 6, 2021 from 11 AM - 12:30 PM Mountain Time. [In The Netherlands – 7:00 PM (19:00)] A short formal program will begin at 11 AM, followed by an informal opportunity to chat. Details will be shared with family and friends.

We look forward to seeing those who loved and cared for Leo there to share memories and stories from his life. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Leo, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
