Obituary for Lawrence Gordon LeHuquet

Larry LeHuquet

1951-2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Gordon LeHuquet, age 71, on Tuesday, April 25th, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. Larry is survived by his children, Jason (Amanda Lima) LeHuquet and Jessica (Jay) Heil; his grandchildren, Paige and Zoe; his ex-wife, Elizabeth McWilliams; and his siblings Mark LeHuquet, Dan LeHuquet, Mike LeHuquet, and Cathy LeHuquet.

Larry was a social and adventurous spirit, and when he was 21 decided on a whim to hitch-hike to the southern tip of South America with only $100 in his pocket. Over the next 9 months he made friends, memories, and stories, eventually turning around in Panama to return to Montreal to be best man at the wedding of his closest friend, Tony Davis.

He was also an avid lover of the outdoors, and often spoke enthusiastically about the hunting and fishing trips he took with his brothers, growing up in Montreal, Quebec. His children were well aware of his life-long love of fishing, often being dragged sleepy-eyed out of bed before dawn to get the best fishing spots along the Bow River, in Policeman’s Flats, or during the family’s yearly cabin vacations on the Shuswap Lake.

Larry had a variety of hobbies over the years, and he undertook each with passion and zeal. His interest in tropical fish resulted in blue-ribbon awards with the Calgary Aquarium Society and a basement half-filled with fifty aquariums. When he took up wine-waking, the second half of the basement was quickly filled with rows of delicious merlots and cabernets, about which no one complained. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, biking, and in his final years, took up playing video games, much to his son’s delight.

Larry struggled with various aspects of his health in the last few years, but with his strong personality and unwavering positivity, he continued living life on his own terms. He traveled to Montreal to visit with his siblings in summer 2022, and was able to have one last adventure in February of this year, as he traveled to Mexico to go snorkeling, enjoy good food and drink, and swim in the ocean.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held in Calgary later this year, as his family is spread around the world.
