Obituary for Kelly James Mitchell

Kelly James Mitchell
April 19, 1959 – December 12, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Kelly James Mitchell age 61 passed away in Calgary, Alberta after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

He will be remembered dearly by his beloved wife Beth, his sons Chad and Mark, whom he was incredibly proud of, his sister Kim (Vic), nieces Michele (Bryan), Lauren (JR), and nephew Brian (Larissa) who he held close to his heart and were extremely important to him. There are countless other family members, friends, colleagues, and teammates who were dear to him and are deeply feeling his absence. He was also very fond of his fur babies Hitch and Sara.

Kelly was born in Ajax, Ontario to Frank and Betty Mitchell. He grew up playing Hockey and Lacrosse and benefited from a Hockey scholarship at Western Michigan University. After completing his education, he began his career in Calgary as an Accountant, he then pivoted to becoming a successful Stockbroker with RBC Dominion Securities. At RBC, Kelly had the opportunity to join management, which led him and his family to move to Edmonton shortly after his son, Chad was born. A few years after moving to Edmonton his second son Mark was born. As his sons were growing up, Kelly had the opportunity to advance within management at RBC leading his family to Regina, Victoria, and finally back to Calgary in 2002.

Kelly dedicated much of his life to both Hockey and Lacrosse where he achieved tremendous heights throughout his playing career. He took every opportunity to give back by coaching both of his sons all throughout their childhood, fond memories they will always hold near and dear to their hearts. Both sports played a major part in his life, however, whenever possible his summers were dedicated to as many rounds of Golf as he could get in. In recent years his passion for Lacrosse provided him with the opportunity to play many Masters Tournaments across different continents such as the World Indoor Tournament in Prague, the World Field Lacrosse Championship in Denver and several Masters Tournaments in Hawaii. Kelly was also very fond of his Friday afternoon Hockey group where they managed to mix in a few hockey(golf) trips to Arizona over the years.

Kelly lived and worked in Calgary for the last 20 years. He made it a priority to return home to Ontario every year and worked hard at maintaining his close relationships with friends, Freddy, Derek, and Steve, as well as his hometown Lacrosse team the Green Gales.

We are all comforted by the many touching stories that have been shared with us and the outpouring of people who have reached out to express their love and support. For those, all of us are forever grateful.

A celebration of Kelly’s life will take place at a later date when we are all able to get together and honour him with a memorial and celebration befitting the man he was and his passion for life. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Kelly, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
