Obituary for Kathleen Ethel McCaughey

Kathleen “Kay” Ethel McCaughey
July 20th, 1921 – December 14th, 2019

Our beloved mother and grandmother, “Kay”, passed away peacefully at the age of 98. She was born in Calgary to Sarah and Samuel Cocker. Her family emigrated to England in 1933 where Kay spent the next 18 years in Sheffield, England. She returned to Calgary in 1951 and shortly thereafter she met and married her loving husband, Reg (Mac) McCaughey, who predeceased her in 1983. They were blessed with two daughters, Pat and Judy.

Kay had a very full life including painting, knitting, golfing, curling, and involvement in her daughters’ many activities. She was a keen bridge player for almost 90 years, and enjoyed cross-country skiing until age 83. For decades, she served on many committees at Parkdale United Church, as well as being an active member of the Bow Valley Lawn Bowling Club. She was on the Board of Directors of the real estate development company Urbco Inc. For the past six years, Kay enjoyed residing at Amica Aspen Woods, where her circle of friends once again expanded. We are very grateful for the care and support she received from her many friends and the wonderful staff at Amica. Her family will miss her great laugh, her quick wit and sense of humour, her wisdom and honesty, her near perfect advice, her positive attitude, crib games, and her amazing rhubarb pies.

Kay is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Pat Wismer and Judy Etcheverry (Bob), and granddaughters Brie (Shawn Ell), and Jayne (Alex Timmons), as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents (Sarah & Sam), her brother (Arthur) and sisters (Doris and Irene).

A Celebration of Kay’s Life will be held at Parkdale United Church (2919 – 8 Ave. NW) on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Kay’s memory to your favourite charity.
