Obituary for Kathleen Jean Ehrlich (Hodgert)

Ehrlich, Kathleen Jean

The family of Kathleen Jean Ehrlich sadly announce her death on Wednesday, July 29th, 2020, at the age of 62 in hospital, at peace and surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her mother, Maureen Hodgert; brothers, Bryan (Jennifer) Hodgert and Kenneth “KJ” Hodgert, and many family and friends.

She was born on November 13, 1957 in Calgary, AB. In Kate’s early years she spent a lot of time with her Grandmother listening to stories of far away destinations and adventures. She grew into a strong-willed teenager with a love for music and art. As a young adult she spent time travelling in Europe and South America.

Once becoming a parent, she refocused her love of travel into becoming a travel agent, working for airlines and eventually opening a scuba dive focused travel agency in the prairies of Alberta.

Along with her love of travel, Kate also had a passion for art; creating her own and an admiration for the masters and contemporaries alike, Frida Kahlo being one of her favourites. She reinvented her art through many mediums over the years, some more prolific than others.

Kate was a passionate soul, which touched all aspects of her life. What she loved, she loved fiercely; that included food, music, clothes. All that knew her, knew her love of good food where she was regularly trying new recipes and ingredients, although her Greek meals will remain legendary. Her love of music was eclectic and spanned many genres and decades. She loved to dance and shout out an “Oooohweee” if the groove struck her just right. Her fashion ranged from classic flannel to Stevie Nicks inspired attire… and the scarves, always a scarf for any occasion.

In the last couple years, she began volunteering for the Calgary Zoo, which she loved. She had all sorts of insider knowledge of many of the animals, including the penguins, baby moose and lemurs. She felt like she was “outdoorsy” in her Merrells. Those that knew Kate knew that the outdoors was not always her strong suit; especially when it came to hiking.

Kate definitely left an impression on many and she will be missed. Her 4 children and 7 grandchildren will hold her memory in their hearts. Her Sowe dog has been patiently waiting for her on the other side, ready to guide her home.

In lieu of flowers, please celebrate Kate’s life by donating in her memory to the Calgary Zoo Foundation or the Calgary Public Library Foundation.

Kate’s Facebook page will be memorialized in September, until then all are welcome to post memories, photos and final words to her.

A Celebration of Kathleen’s Life will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Details to follow. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Kate, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
