Obituary for Joyce Mary Alexander (Young)

July 25, 1935 – Oct. 27, 2022
It’s with great sadness we announce that Joyce Mary Alexander passed away peacefully on Oct. 27, 2022 with her son, Roy, and husband, Glenn, by her side.

Born in Montreal, Joyce was raised alongside four sisters and one very patient brother in a house full of love and laughter by parents Jean and James Young.

Joyce’s life was characterized by her love for her family—a love that extended from her parents and siblings to a “nice blue-eyed fellow” by the name of Glenn. She married the love of her life in 1955, marking the beginning of a 67-year love story.

Joyce and Glenn started their family together in Chateauguay, Quebec with their sons Reid and Roy, and welcomed their nephew Jim (like a son to them) into their home for many years. The couple travelled the world together and spent many summers with their family road tripping and camping across the country and in the United States.

In 1976, Joyce and Glenn moved their family to Calgary—following their long-time friends the McKay family. As more of their family and friends moved out West the couple began to grow their roots there. So much did she embrace the spirit of the West, that her and Glenn hosted an annual Stampede breakfast. It was in Calgary that Joyce gained two daughters-in-love, Debbie and Elaine, formed deep friendships and discovered her greatest passion in life—her grandchildren.

Though she came to love other activities like hiking and bowling, time spent with her favourite grandchild Jocelyn, and her other grandchild Mark, was most precious (This may or may not have been written by Jocelyn). Joyce, Glenn their children and grandchildren have spent the past 30 years spending summer weeks in Columbia Falls, Montana, golfing, swimming, and shopping.
Known as a cherished and loving Auntie who cared for many of her siblings’ children, Joyce was quick to welcome any and all into her home. Later in her life, her nieces and nephews and their children showed the same care and attention for her in her time of need.

She leaves behind her sisters Jean and Marian and brother Gordie. She is pre-deceased by her sisters Margaret and Bonnie and her mother and father.

Joyce leaves a legacy of generosity, love, laughter and devotion to those around her.
