Obituary for Jack Ashby

John (Jack) Ashby, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at the age of 76. He was born on December 3, 1946 in Regina, SK. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his faithful wife of (31 years), Gerri; daughter Jaelyn; sons, Darin (Donna) and Todd (Michelle) and their mother, Linda Ashby; his stepchildren, Ryan Law, Breanne Leclerc (Marc) and Nicole Law. Jack is also survived by 12 grandchildren; brothers, Bud (Marlene) and Doug (Connie); and sister, Lorna (Gerry) Bell. Jack was predeceased by his father, Ed in 1981 and mother, Marg in 1995.

Jack took his name seriously in his career which included banking, teaching, consultant, salesman, Pastor, Celebrant, Officiant/Chaplain. Jack was a die-hard Saskatchewan Roughrider fan which included being a Rider Rep for Saskatoon. Jack also was instrumental in the angular setting up of lotteries for Friends of the Roughriders, Friends of the Calgary Stampeders and Friends of the Blue Bombers.

Jack served on the executive of Saskatchewan/Saskatoon Home Builders Association including President of the Saskatoon division.

While in ministry, Jack served 14 years in the Calgary Evangelical Ministerial Association culminating in a term as President.
Following his father Ed’s footsteps Jack spent many years on the board of Western Christian College serving the need of largely rural students for a Christian education.

In his retirement years, he and his wife Gerri partnered in Weddings by Jack and Gerri and helped more than 300 couples with their wedding ceremonies. By partnering with these couples, the hope was that these couples would have life long, healthy marriages. Many of these couples became lifelong friends.

Jack & Gerri loved to travel and experienced domestic and international travel creating many memories seeing the sights of Hawaii, Spain, Italy, Austria, Paris, Dominican, and many US cities. Gerri was the key to coordinating all aspects of their travels and had many itineraries which had been researched thoroughly.

In semi-retirement, Jack served as a Chaplain with Calgary City Police in both district four and with the Calgary Police Veterans Association. In acting as a chaplain, Jack believed that this was about relationship and not religion and two key words he tried to exemplify were “grace” and “hope”. These were something he wanted to impact people who he met. He had many opportunities to conduct celebrations of life with Choice Memorial for numerous families and his message was always based on these two words.

Funeral Service will be held in the Harvest Room at First Alliance Church (12345-40th Street SE) on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Visitation prior to service. In honour of Jack’s love for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, those attending the service are invited to wear their favourite Roughrider’s gear. For those unable to attend the service, the service will be available through this Livestream Link.
