Obituary for Jan Michael Soltek

Jan Michael Soltek was born July 11, 1988, in Calgary, Alberta to Lavonne and Dale Soltek. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor’s degree in communications. After completing a recovery program at the Calgary Dream Centre, Jan lived with his Oma (grandmother Lieka Grichtmeier) before relocating to Edmonton. He passed away unexpectedly in Edmonton on Friday, March 31, 2023, at the age of 34 years.

Jan is survived by his parents; siblings, Marika (Kurt) Sikora, Hanna (Timothy) Nguyen, Erik (Megan) Soltek, Emilie (Frank) Lutz-Orozco and Danica Soltek; grandparents, Ronald (Donna) Banman and Lieka (George) Grichtmeier; nephew, Levi; niece, Aria; and many cousins, aunts, and uncles. Jan was predeceased by his grandmother, Sylvia Soltek.

Jan aspired to be a journalist and was intelligent and articulate. Jan loved to spend time in nature. He enjoyed hiking in the Rocky Mountains, rock climbing, and playing and watching sports, especially hockey.

Jan attended Eastside City Church during his childhood and young adult years. The church community loved Jan and provided support and friendship. Jan loved God and was passionate about his faith. Sadly, he did not receive emotional healing this side of heaven for his difficult childhood and unresolved trauma and sought comfort in substances. Jan’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the family members, friends and church community who loved Jan, prayed for him, and helped him in various ways.

Most of all, we are grateful to God, who always kept Jan in His sight and arms, knowing the pain in his heart and the frailty of human flesh. Psalm 56:8 says, “You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?” In Jan’s final moments, Jesus was there to offer forgiveness and restoration into the arms of his heavenly Father. Every tear has now been wiped away, and every hurt has been healed. Addiction, anger, and sorrow no longer have any hold on him. His life here on earth was marked with pain, but eternity in heaven is pure joy. We look forward to reuniting with Jan and seeing him healed and made whole with our own eyes.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Eastside City Church (1320 Abbeydale Drive SE, Calgary, AB). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jan’s memory to Calgary Dream Centre.
