Obituary for James Gordon Traub

James (Jim) Gordon Traub
October 16, 1953 - April 22, 2022

Jim was born in Calgary in 1953, the oldest child of Gordon and Donna Traub. He completed his education as a Communication Electrician in 1979 and had a lifelong career with AGT, Telus, and Telus Mobility. His Mobility team members will remember Telus Mobility “Awads” nights in the Columbia Valley.

Jim’s great love of the mountains led him to spend many joyous days in the Kananaskis. In 1974, while overlooking the valley below Ribbon Lake, Jim was inspired to capture the majesty of the mountains on film. Jim invested 15 years developing his business Wilderness Respect, with sales in video, greeting cards, and framed photographs. In the early nineties, Jim expanded his exploration of nature to the Purcell Mountains. Jim spent many hours building trails, a swinging bridge, and a tram across the ravine at the family cottage in Edgewater, BC.

Jim endeavored to bring the beauty of the mountains to his home in Calgary, where he took great pride in his garden at Shawnessy Court. Jim’s many hobbies included woodworking, photography, rock collecting, and building dioramas. He will be best remembered for his generosity, his willingness to always help out a friend or neighbour, and his wacky sense of humour. Anyone who visited him had the pleasure of exploring the Wingnut warehouse.

After a long and courageous battle, Jim succumbed to cancer in hospice on April 22, 2022. Jim was a fighter and maintained a positive attitude throughout his ten-year illness.

Jim is survived by his mother, Donna Traub and her husband, Bill Hawkins; his sisters, Joan Traub and Catherine Smith (Randy); his niece and nephews, Jack Moddle (Jess), Devon Bell (Carter), Tom Smith (Kelsie), and Rachel Smith; and his great niece and nephews, Leo Moddle, Cooper Smith, and Scarlett Smith. He was predeceased by his father in 2005.

Jim’s ashes will be interred at his father’s grave at a later date. To share photos, condolences, and memories of Jim, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
