Obituary for James Ronald Duggan

James Ronald Duggan
October 20, 1937 - Toronto, Ontario
March 22, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of James (Jim) Duggan, beloved husband of Val, father to their strong blended Duggan/Wheeler family; Bruce (Celia), Brian (Tiffany), Shana, Kathleen, Craig, Nicole (Ian), Justine (Paul), Meryl (Senan), and his favourite role of Poppa to grandchildren Chad, Daniel, Bryn, Moira, Gareth, Zach, Mackenzie, Ashley, Jorja and Adeline.

Jim was a genuine, kind and caring man. He was always welcoming and willing to help anyone in need as demonstrated by his community activity with the Kinsmen Club of Calgary, and Calgary North Rotary. He was a dedicated volunteer at Catholic Family Service for over 20 years, a champion on behalf of the families they served, often saying “It’s the right thing to do!” Among his many contributions to Catholic Family Service, he served as Board Chair and Treasurer. He was a mentor to other board members and staff, always willing to lend a hand, give advice or offer praise.

Known for his integrity and fairness, Jim was Manager of the Toole & Cote Commercial Real Estate Division in the 80’s. He joined Target Realty on January 1, 1993, and since 1998 until his passing was their Broker. One of the most respected brokers in the industry, he was a vital part of the Target Realty team as a mentor providing guidance to the agents and staff.

Jim came from a large family and would never miss the annual Duggan Boys ‘Hunt’ Camp in whichever province it took place. Next to his family, Jim loved hockey and played on a number of teams in Ontario and Alberta through which he made many lifelong friends. Although he hung up his ‘old timer’ skates at age 81, you could find him sitting in his favourite chair at home cheering on the Flames. Bird carving was his hobby and there were many friends and family members who received the fruits of his labour over the years.

There were numerous family gatherings large and small, and entering the room Jim would announce his arrival saying “Captain on deck”. He had a wry sense of humour and was full of ‘folk wisdom’. He enjoyed and was a fierce euchre player, especially in the many games played in Palm Springs. One of his sayings was “it is a gift”. He was dearly loved by all the family and was “a gift” to us.

The family would like to sincerely thank Palliative Care Dr. Fiona Dunne, and Nurse Practitioner Jen Koppel for their caring and compassionate support and extend appreciation to the nurses and staff of Unit 102, Foothills Medical Centre. Many thanks to Dr. Sharma and the staff at Dulcina Hospice for the support they provided during Jim’s stay with them.
At Jim’s request there will be no formal Service, but a Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at a later date.

If friends wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s memory to Unlocking Potential (UP) Foundation or by telephone at (403) 205-8529 or to Father Lacombe Care Foundation or by telephone at (403) 254-6281.
