Obituary for Ilona Elizabeth "Helen" Pozsonyi (Stranszky)

Pozsonyi, Helen Ilona [nee Stranszky]
July 1, 1933 – May 11, 2019

Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on May 11, 2019 at the age of 85. She lost her loving husband Alex [Sandor Guyla] Pozsonyi after forty-seven years of marriage in 1999. She is also pre-deceased by infant daughter Elizabeth Susanna, her parents, sister Maria, and brothers Lazlo and Tibi.

She married Alex, in Papa, Hungary which is also her birthplace. They welcomed their first child, Helen Maria. The trio immigrated to Canada in 1957 and planted roots in Calgary. They added two more children to the family with Margo [Murray] Leib, of Calgary, and son Alexsandor Pozsonyi [Susan Gallagher] of Saskatoon.

She is also survived by her brother, Zoli and extended family in Hungary and in Canada by grandchildren Nichole [Jermaine] Thompson, Nadia [Robert] Van Doren, Kelsey Brown, Mitchell Brown [Jordana Clark], Morgan Brown [Matt Grose]; great-grandchildren Foster Brown and Ayanna Thompson.

Helen will be sadly missed by her best friend Barbara Pinter, who took her gallivanting and would call daily at 10:00 a.m. She is also survived by family friend, Attila Murkl, who never failed to visit and be called on for help.

The family extends their sincerest appreciation to CPS and EMS who supported the family during a difficult time. Many thanks to family doctor Sara Kunneman, Drs. Exner, Sumner, and Rizkala [Foothills Hospital/Libin Institute], Carla and Dr. Sharma [Rockyview Cardiac Function Clinic & Cardiac Device Clinic], We Care Workers; especially Vanzell, Marigen, Elvira, Dorthea; Suzanne [Friendly Visitor Home Care Volunteer Program]; Agusha, Wilson and Linda [London Drugs Pharmacy]. As well, we thank The Sierra’s of Heritage Craft Ladies, who enriched Mom’s life and will be remembered. Thank you Cheryl Reitzer RN [AHC Heart Care], who coordinated a multitude of tasks to allow Mom to remain at home. These incredible individuals, helped us have Mom a little while longer.

We will miss Mom dearly, knowing now that she’s dancing once again with Dad.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca) would be welcomed.

As per Helen’s final request, a private family service will take place at a later date. To view and share photos, condolences and stories of Helen, visit www.choicememorial.com.
