Obituary for Heinz Franz Jaedicke

Heinz Franz Jaedicke
March 14, 1925 - April 14, 2022

Heinz Jaedicke of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at the age of 97 years and one month.
He was the loving father of son, Karl Jaedicke and his wife, Kim and their daughter, Brittany of Calgary and son, Darryl Jaedicke of Vancouver Island BC. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Claire Mary Jaedicke in 2008; his parents and sister in Germany.

Heinz was born in Ballenstadt, Germany in 1925, at the age of 17 he was drafted into the Navy. In November 1944 his ship was sunk in the English Channel where he was one of 7 people that survived. He was in the English Channel for approximately 8 hours. He was then picked up by an English destroyer and became a prisoner of war first in England, then Scotland then Ontario and finally Alberta. He was a prisoner for 4 years. He was sent back to Germany in 1948 or 1949. He remained in Germany until he was able to escape East Germany to West Germany then proceeded back to Canada to Lethbridge where he worked for the farmer he previously worked for as a prisoner of war. When he eventually left the farm, he ended up in Edmonton with just 35 cents in his pocket.

He met Mary and they were married and started to raise their family, first Karl in 1953 then Darryl in 1954. In approximately 1959, they moved to Calgary where they lived in Acadia, Lakeview and finally Dover. Heinz was working as an Blue Print Machine Repairman for Hughes Owens.

In 1986 they took the opportunity to purchase a new home in the Glenrosa area of Westbank BC. This was heaven on earth for both Heinz and Mary. Dad swam in the summer in the lake and the winter at the Aquatic Centre in Westbank. Dad noted it was interesting people that previously were in a war against each other became friends and looked forward to their story telling in the pool during the week. One of the pool buddies was Bobby Clarkes’ dad so many a story was told about hockey while in the pool. Dad was quite a hockey player in Germany before the use of pads and helmets!

Mary started to babysit for a family down the street that became family to them. Karl and Darryl will always be thankful for Chris Garvin and her family for the TLC for both Mom and Dad as they aged and for Dad until we moved him back to Calgary in 2010 as his health started to slide and he could no longer live on his own.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes there will not be a Service. He will be cremated then interred sometime this summer with Mom, overlooking the beautiful Okanogan Lake they loved so well.

The family would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at Monterey Seniors Residence for their care and compassion of Dad during his stay at their facility.
