Obituary for Harold Lloyd Schnell

Harold Lloyd Schnell
January 29, 1936 - January 18, 2023

Harold Schnell beloved husband of Vivian Schnell of Calgary passed away at Peter Lougheed Hospital Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at the age of 86.

He was the loving father to Lori (Rob) Martens of Crofton, BC, Jolene Schnell of Victoria, BC and Susie Brown and Garnet Schnell of Calgary, AB; grandfather to Jared (Adrienne) Martens, Madeline and Zachary Brown and great-grandfather to Ruby. Harold is also survived by his siblings, Nasie Jr. (June), Gordon (Jean), Ken, Reta, Delores (Larry), Joanne (Lyman) and Carolyn (Dennis). He was predeceased by his parents, Nasie Sr. and Rose; brothers, James (Leona), George (Sharon), Glen, sister-in-law, Darlene and brother-in-law, Irvine.

Harold was raised in Estevan where he and his siblings enjoyed many sports like baseball, hockey, curling and basketball where he forged lifelong friendships. He met the love of his life, Vivian, 67 years ago, started a family and came to Alberta for job opportunities. He was a plumber before becoming a salesman for Pine Crest Poultry. He branched out to sales at a major garbage company, BFI and eventually partnered with a friend and created his own company, Calgary Waste Removal where his motto was “My Business is Picking Up”.

Eventually he brought in his brother/best friend George to run this successful family business. Schnell Stables was developed with his brothers and started a lifelong dream of breeding thoroughbred horses. He was generous to less fortunate people and would help them along the way. “Harry” was mostly known for his great sense of humour and story telling. He and Vivian loved to dance in the early days, and he lived to have fun with family and friends. In his later years, his love for golf and going to the track gave him immense joy. He was very loved and will be dearly missed. The family will hold a Celebration of Life sometime in the spring 2023. We will announce a date and time closer to the date.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations are gratefully accepted by The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
