Obituary for Hagop Kamajian

KAMAJIAN, Hagop

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Hagop Kamajian of Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 76 years, on Monday, April 27, 2020. Hagop passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Hagop was born in January 1944 in Beirut, Lebanon. Hagop left his successful electric and battery shop in Beirut and immigrated to Canada in 1976 with his young family and mother in search of a better life. In Canada, Hagop soon found work in the auto industry and became an auto body technician for over 40 years.
Hagop was our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a proud, loyal, kind gentleman who always had time to provide a boost or repair your car. Our Dad is remembered by us as having a fun sense of humor and natural ability to find levity in any situation. We loved hearing his stories in his thick accent and his memorable one-liners. Even though Dad did not read or write he spoke four languages including Armenian, Arabic, Turkish and English. He was never short of words to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Hagop loved the simple things in life and was particularly proud of his family. He loved animals and enjoyed the summers fishing. Even if he caught nothing, he was still thankful that we had an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and hear the relaxing sounds of the water crashing. Hagop was fond of his many pets including a tortoise, canary, budgie, dog and rabbit. Hagop relished every opportunity to plan family barbecues and making shish kabob for his grandchildren. After an emperor’s feast he would prepare the charcoal for some shisha and turn up the music for some belly dancing. Hagop especially enjoyed a glass of scotch and playing cards with the family to the wee hours of the morning. He loved watching sports on TV but was most proud of watching his grandchildren excel on the football field and dance stage. With his drum and horn in tow Hagop did not miss a game or dance recital.

Hagop will be lovingly remembered by his adoring wife and sweetheart of 49 years, Selva Kamajian (nee Kahyayan); his two sons, Steve (Gina) and Hrant; his two grandchildren, Silvarose and Jacob; also survived by his elder siblings, Ardemis Kouyoumdjian and Hampartsoum Kamajian; his brother-in-law, Krikor Kahyayan (Madeline); his sister-in-law, Sonig Mekhedjian (Jack) along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Hagop’s laughter, charm, and humour will be greatly missed but remembered forever. His lust for life and kindness has influenced the lives of every person found in his presence. The love Hagop shared for his family will be cherished and carried on for generations to come. May he rest in peace. We love you.

Due to the current gathering restrictions, a private ceremony will take place at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens, and a Celebration of Hagop’s Life will be held at a later date.

The Kamajian family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to everyone who has offered their condolences, prayers and support. We appreciate each and everyone of you and we know we can get through these trying times together.
